The Ministry of Culture established the Academy of Arts in 1959. Academy of Arts is one of high education institutions specialized in teaching expressional arts aiming at raising the level of art, protecting the popular heritage, and enhancing relations on both
regional and international levels. The academy started with three institutes; cinema, music and ballet, then developed and widened its scope to comprise seven art high institutes as follows:
1-Higher Institute of Folk Arts:
The Higher Institute of Folk Arts was established in 1981 to prepare artists to graduate as experts in the popular (folk) arts in order to protect and record the folk tradition.
2-Higher Institute of Ballets:
The Higher Institute of Ballets was established in 1959 aiming at graduating ballerinas who are able to raise the art of ballet and develop the Egyptian ballet on high artistic bases.
3-Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts:
The Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts was established in 1944 aiming at preparing professional actors, directors and artists of theatrical decoration and criticism. The institute compromises six specialized branches; namely, acting, dramatic Arts, Décor, criticism, make-up, and integrated artist.
4-Higher Institute of Arab Music:
The Higher Institute of Arab Music was established in 1929 to prepare the highly qualified musicians. There are two troupes in the institute: Um Kalthoum Band for Arab Music and Religious Recitation Band.
5-Higher Institute of Cinema:
The High Cinema Institute was established in 1959 aiming at graduating highly cinematic cultured actors to participate in raising the cinema industry.
6-Higher Institute of Music (Conservatoire):
The Higher Institute of Music (Conservatoire) was established in 1959 aiming at graduating musicians. Students of the institute who represent the orchestra and coral of the conservatory participate in many festivals and celebrations.
7-Higher Institute of Art Criticism:
The Higher Institute for Criticism graduates high-level art critics. The students of the institute practice art criticism of art festivals.
8-Higher institute of Child's Arts:
The academy of Arts grants the scientific degrees including (bachelor, master degree and P.H. degree) and it also pays due attention to young talents. It enables talented children to join a school, affiliated to the Academy, for free studies in ballet, music and theatrical arts. The Academy of Arts contributes considerably to the cultivation of public ethos and tastes through the artistic troupes established for practical application of the theoretical studies as well as providing art shows. These troupes include:
- Academic Troupes of Folk Music
- Academy of Arts Symphonic Orchestra
- Children & Youth Coral
- Academic Troupe of Ballet
- Academic Troupe of Theatre
Due to its considerable role in enhancing arts, many Arab students are encouraged to join the Academy of Arts in the recent years. Leadership:
