【🏆 DUPAD PhD Graduate Received 2026 IGU Young and Early Career Award】

We are thrilled to share that Dr. Si Qiao, a 2024 PhD graduate of the Department of Urban Planning and Design (DUPAD) at HKU, has been honoured with 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐈𝐆𝐔 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐲 from the 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐈𝐆𝐔). 🎉

The award was presented at the 2026 IGU Regional Conference in Istanbul, Türkiye (17–21 August 2026). Dr. Qiao, supervised during her PhD by Professor Anthony Yeh, is now an Assistant Professor in the Thrust of Urban Governance and Design at HKUST (Guangzhou).

The IGU, established in 1922, is an international scientific organisation devoted to advancing geographical research, education, and international collaboration. In 2026, only four scholars worldwide were selected for this award, which recognises outstanding and innovative early-career geographers.

Dr. Qiao was recognised for her innovative contributions to 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐀𝐈, 𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐲, and 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞. Her research develops data-driven and computational approaches to understanding human mobility and urban systems, with particular attention to safer and more equitable mobility. The award also recognises her international research collaborations and her efforts in demonstrating how geographical science can contribute to improving everyday mobility and quality of life across different communities.

【🎓 DUPAD TPG Orientation Day 2026 – A Warm Welcome to Our New Postgraduate Students】

On 29 August 2026, DUPAD held its 𝐓𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 (𝐓𝐏𝐆) 𝐎𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐚𝐲 for new students across all six master's programmes, marking the start of the new academic year. 🎉

The event featured a joint plenary session where students met the teaching team, followed by programme-specific sessions with detailed curriculum overviews and interactive exchanges. Some programmes also invited professional institute representatives to share industry insights, which helped students gain a clearer understanding of career prospects and professional pathways in their respective fields.

It was a lively and engaging day, and we wish all our new students a rewarding journey ahead! 🎓🌟

【🎓 BAUS Orientation & Induction 2026/27 – Welcoming Our New Cohort!】
On 14 August 2026, the Department of Urban Planning and Design (DUPAD) held an orientation session for our incoming 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬 (𝐁𝐀𝐔𝐒) students. The event was designed to help our new cohort get a head start on their academic journey, familiarising them with the programme structure and campus resources.

Here is a look back at the highlights of the day! 🏙️

The session began with a warm welcome from our Department Head, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐞, followed by a meet-and-greet with the teaching team and an interactive self-introduction session for students to get to know one another. Programme Director, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐊𝐲𝐮𝐧𝐠-𝐦𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐦, provided a detailed overview of the curriculum and administrative matters, while representatives from the Planning and Development Division of the 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐫𝐬 (𝐇𝐊𝐈𝐒) shared valuable insights into industry prospects and professional pathways. Students also had the chance to connect with their academic advisors, and later enjoyed a guided tour of student work led by 𝐌𝐫. 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐠, Academic Advisor of the Programme.

The atmosphere throughout the session was warm and engaging, and our new students showed great enthusiasm. We are committed to providing all our students with comprehensive academic support and learning resources, and we wish our new cohort a rewarding and enriching journey ahead!
