From 8 to 11 June 2026, the inaugural HKUโ€“MIT Summer Institute was held across Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Built around the central theme of "AI for Cities," the programme drew on cutting-edge big-data analytics and AI technologiesโ€”large language models, generative AI, spatiotemporal big data, and smart sensorsโ€”to advance a sustainable path for urban development. More than 80 tutors and students came together to examine the complex challenges facing Guangzhou, a mega-city, across four domainsโ€”socio-economic development, environmental resilience, future mobility, and urban morphologyโ€”exploring the potential of artificial intelligence to empower urban planning and design, probing the deep integration of digital technologies, intelligent algorithms, and urban research, and proposing innovative strategies for spatial planning. The programme ultimately awarded one First Prize (HK$5,000), one Second Prize (HK$3,000), and four Third Prizes (HK$1,000 each). In this edition, we are pleased to share a review of the six award-winning projects and the outstanding teams and faculty members behind them.

Let's swipe through to explore the highlights of the winning projects and the creative process behind them!

From 8 to 11 June 2026, the inaugural HKUโ€“MIT Summer Institute was held across Guangzhou and Hong Kong. The Institute was jointly founded by the Department of Urban Planning and Design (DUPAD) of HKU and the Hong Kong Base of State Key Laboratory of Subtropical Building and Urban Science, and was co-organised by MIT's Senseable City Lab, Center for Real Estate, and Guangzhou Urban Planning and Design Company Limited. As the first in-depth collaboration among DUPAD, the MIT Senseable City Lab, and the Guangzhou planning company, it served both as a new platform for international academic exchange and as an innovative endeavour to integrate scholarship with practice in the Greater Bay Area.

ใ€In Milan, A Design Class Without Wallsใ€‘

If the future of a city is an open-ended question, where do young designers look for inspiration? In its layered history, cutting-edge ideas, or the everyday life unfolding on the streets right now? Recently, students from HKUโ€™s ๐Œ๐”๐ƒ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐š๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ž took their studio classroom (MUDP1002 International Urban Design Studio) to Milan, Italy. Inside the studio, they analyzed cases and data. Out on the city streets, they touched the bones of history and the outlines of the future. Through this intensive field trip, they walked, listened, and collaborated โ€” trying to write their own answers.

A field trip like this is more than just travel โ€” itโ€™s an immersive reset for design thinking. It pulls young designers out of their familiar surroundings and lets them constantly recalibrate by comparing history with the future, ideas with reality, and themselves with others. The real takeaway may not be a finished proposal, but the confidence to put forward and defend an idea amid a complex reality. The Milan chapter has ended, but the story of how we create meaningful places continues in each studentโ€™s work.
