Turn-in-the-wind

CUHK Campus Edition — Seasonal Blossoms & Fruitful Plants 🌸

Turn-in-the-wind is a dioecious species
When the wind blows its leaves flutter gracefully, revealing their silvery-white undersides
This may be why it earned
the English name ‘Turn-in-the-wind’

The pair of glands at the base of each leaf is a common characteristic of the Euphorbiaceae
These nectar glands attract ants to the tree
The ants act like bodyguards, helping to deter leaf-eating insects
In this way, they help protect the tree

〖白楸 Turn-in-the-wind〗
Mallotus paniculatus (Lam.) Müll. Arg.

Turn-in-the-wind is a common native medium-sized tree, mainly found along the edges of early secondary forests.

When strong winds flip the leaves over, the canopy displays an easily identifiable white hue, which explains the origin of its English common name, "Turn-in-the-wind."

Field observations reveal that the extrafloral nectaries located at the base of its leaves frequently attract ants to forage and linger. Furthermore, studies indicate that Turn-in-the-wind not only uses sugars to lure ants, but also leverages symbiotic fungi as "matchmakers" and "salespeople" to attract and retain them, thereby protecting the tree and reducing pest and disease infestations.

〖九節 Wild Coffee〗
𝘗𝘴𝘺𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢 L.

Wild coffee grows wild across Southern China and Southeast Asia. In Hong Kong, it is not only a native species, but also very common in the understory of most secondary forests. The plant thrives under the weak light of dense canopies, whereas strong light hinders its growth. It provides nectar for insects during spring and summer and produces juicy fruits that serve as essential ecological food in the forest during summer, autumn, and winter.

This plant can be used as an herbal medicine, known as "Shan Da Dao." Ethnomedicine utilizes it to treat colds, fevers, traumatic injuries, and snakebites. Pharmacological studies have revealed its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, helping to explain the mechanisms behind its traditional medicinal uses.

Botanical Illustrated Guide to Hong Kong Native Plants (Volume III): Rare and Endangered Plants

📖 An Authoritative Reference Guide for the Botanical Professionals: Preserving the everlasting biography for Hong Kong's native plants!

This illustrated book is the powerful collaboration between the botanist and botanical illustrators, resulting in a rare and deeply profound reference work within the industry. The illustrations in this illustrated book were illustrated mainly by two Botanical Illustrators, Ms Man-Ching Li, Jenny and Ms Ka-Yi Wong, Mimi, with valuable enrichments by Mr Ping Ma, a Senior Botanical Illustrator. Mr Ma was the main illustrator for the Flora of Inner Mongolia. and Bryophyte Flora of Macao and has contributed to major botanical publications such as Flora of China and Flora of Hong Kong.

Each plant species account in this illustrated book includes a literature review, voucher plant specimens, botanical illustrations with annotations, and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Images of pollen and spores, which have been authenticated by the Curator, Dr David Tai-Wai Lau. Through collaboration between the botanist and botanical illustrators, we aim to create a comprehensive database of Hong Kong's native plants and bridge the gap in their scientific documentation.
