The Asia Pacific Regional Meeting (APRM) is the annual regional meeting for the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA). This year AMSAHK bought APRM back to Hong Kong after 7 years, and it has been a truly unforgettable experience for us.

Throughout the week, we welcomed over 200 delegates from more than 20 NMOs to Hong Kong. Alongside our core Plenaries and Standing Committee sessions, we hosted Theme Events with our Hong Kong professors to engage the pressing issue in our region – sustainability. Other than the core sessions, we showcased our Hong Kong culture through social programmes and the National Food and Drinks Party.

亞太地區會議（APRM）係國際醫學生聯盟（IFMSA) 嘅年度地區會議。事隔7年，AMSAHK將APRM帶返香港，對我哋嚟講真係一次難忘嘅體驗。

喺成個星期入面，我哋接待咗嚟自20多個NMO、超過200位代表嚟到香港。除咗Pleanries 同 Standing Committee Sessions之外，我哋仲同香港嘅教授一齊舉辦咗主題活動 （Theme Event)，討論醫學環保嘅問題。另外我哋仲透過社交活動同「國際飲食派對」（NFDP）展示香港文化。

Are you aware of the challenges deaf patients face 🧏?
How prepared are you to communicate with patients who use sign language 🤔?

There are currently a lot of communication barriers between deaf patients and healthcare professionals. For example, physicians often speak quickly, so deaf patients rely on lip-reading, which can be ineffective as complex terms are often used.

As medical students, we should aim to bridge these gaps by developing the skills and empathy needed to provide the best quality care for all patients ❤️🤝.

“Breaking The Silence”, SCOME’s annual flagship event, is the perfect opportunity to do so. For this three-part workshop, we have partnered with SLCO Community Resources to teach participants medical-related terminology in sign language with the guidance of an instructor with hearing impairment.

By the end of this workshop, you can gain a deeper understanding of deaf patients’ experiences and challenges, and in the future, deliver compassionate and inclusive care that caters to their needs.

現時，聽障人士同醫護人員之間有好多溝通障礙。例如，醫生講嘢通常好快，聽障病人要靠睇口形，但係當醫生經常會用啲好複雜嘅術語，讀唇未必咁有效。

作為醫學生，我哋應該努力彌合聽障病人同醫生之間嘅差距，培養所需嘅技巧和同理心，為所有病人提供優質嘅醫療服務。❤️🤝

SCOME 嘅年度旗艦活動「打破沉默」，係一個好機會讓你學習更多有關手語嘅資訊同相關嘅溝通技巧。喺呢個三部分嘅工作坊入面，我哋會同「語橋社資」攜手合作，由一位聽障講師指導參加者如何用手語表達醫學上嘅術語。

完成工作坊後，你可以更加深入明白聽障病人嘅經歷同困難，將來可以用有同情心同包容嘅態度提供更好嘅服務。

The Academic Department (ACAD 🔬📊)’s mission is to equip AMSAHK members with the skills to conduct original research, present on an international stage, and contribute to Hong Kong’s growing reputation as a medical research and innovation hub 🌏🎓

Being part of ACAD means having a supportive group of peers behind your ideas, every step of the way 🧬💊. This past year, our team co-authored research with HKU and CUHK professors, placing 3rd and 2nd, respectively, in the scientific paper competitions at EAMSC and AMSC 🏆. Our projects spanned postpartum depression, AI-driven drug discovery, and antibody design for Chikungunya virus 🧬💊. We also welcomed 221 students to tackle chronic diseases in our HKUMed- and CUMed-endorsed competition, awarding winners with InnoHK lab attachments 🥼, and partnered with AMSA Thailand to bring research training to 400+ medical students worldwide 🌍—and that’s just a glimpse of what we do :)!

The Standing Committee on Exchange (SCOE🗺️🧳) is all about connecting medical students from all around the world 🌍! Split into 3 sections, SCOPE 🧑‍⚕️ for professional exchanges, SCORE 🔬for research exchanges and AMSEP 🧑‍✈️ for preclinical exchanges, we help students exchange at every stage of their medical journey!

This year, we conducted a number of professional and research exchanges✈️. Preclinical students from countries such as Belgium and Portugal, and clinical students from Brazil and Malaysia, attached to doctors and professors at HKU and CUHK 🥼🩺. To facilitate, we organised transport logistics, social meal gatherings, and visits to local attractions - ensuring a welcoming experience for their four-week exchanges.

We also successfully ran AMSEP, in which we brought Filipino and German medical students on a journey of discovering Hong Kong’s vibrant culture, delicious foods 🍜 and attractions 🏙️. From academic exposure to unforgettable social activities, we’ve built friendships that will surely last a lifetime 🤝.

The Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME)’s mission is simple: to support and supplement medical students everywhere with the knowledge that medical curricula sometimes do not cover 🌍🩺.

We focus on issues that often get overlooked. Last year, we ran a workshop called “Speaking To The Spectrum”, training students in SEN communication and empathy, and organised a Condom Making Workshop in collaboration with SCORA❤️, and created an entire Medical Escape Room!

The Public Relations Department (PR 📩🗣️) connects AMSAHK with external parties. We communicate with professors and student groups from both medical schools, as well as other organisations. 📢🤩🤩

Besides networking, PR also has a major role in hosting our Inauguration Ceremony and MedStart, our annual flagship event targeting aspiring medical students. 😇As a member of PR, you get free public speaking training as preparation for your role as MCs at MedStart. 🎤🗣️We work extra hard every year to ensure the success of these events. 😁💪

The Secretariat Department (SEC 🤑💎🗂️) handles a lot of the behind-the-scenes work that keeps AMSAHK going!

From planning big events like Inauguration Ceremony and MedStart, to helping other departments organise their activities, SEC is involved in making things happen 🤩 We also liaise with faculty, sort out merchandise, and work with other operational departments when last-minute problems come up 💡✅

Of course, SEC also takes care of AMSAHK’s finances, including invoices, reimbursements, and collecting payments from participants 💰💸💵

If you like planning ahead, solving problems with your friends, and want to learn more about managing finances, come join SEC 🐣🐣🐣

SEC 🤑💎🗂️ 係 AMSAHK 嘅幕後支柱，我哋主要負責處理各種維繫學會運作嘅大小事務！
