Clonakilty Agricultural College locally known as Darrara College, has been involved in agricultural

Currently we are providing training for 240 students between all of our courses. There is a balance of both school leavers and mature participants among the students. Students are trained in the theory and practice of Agriculture and business and get an opportunity to work in a practical way on farms as part of their training. Graduates of our courses not only return to farm the land but also contribute in many sectors of the Agricultural industry, including Co-Ops, trade suppliers, Agricultural businesses.

Last week, visited the college, engaging with our Advanced Certificate in Dairy, Apprenticeship, and Cork students in a discussion on breeding, milk recording, and herd health. We extend our gratitude to Denis and Anthony for sharing their expertise with our students.

Last week our advanced cert dairy students visited the farm of Ronald and Brian Shorten.
Many topics were discussed including spring & autumn calving, antibiotic use, vaccination programmes, cow performance and animal housing.
Thanks to Brian for his time given to the students.
Students were accompanied by college lecturers Miriam Dineen & Anna Hourihane.

Our 1st Year Farm Technician Apprentices recently attended the Lely & Munster Bovine Open Day at Declan Walsh’s farm in Mallow, Co.Cork. 🐄🧑‍🌾
The apprentices gained valuable insights into how robotic milking systems can be successfully integrated into a grazing-based dairy system. A great opportunity to see innovative technology in action! 🌱👏

Our advanced cert and apprenticeship students had two speakers in to talk to them last week.

We welcomed Ian Lynch from the Clonakilty advisory office where he gave an in-depth talk and practical session to the students in milking machines and milk quality.

We also welcomed bord via onsite where Marie, Rachel & Brian spoke to students about bord Bia audits but also career opportunities that are available to them.

Thanks to all speakers for taking the time to speak to our students.

Last week our advanced dairy herd management students visited the farms of John & Brian O’ Connor and Sean O’ Riordan.
Students got to observe the heavy soils programme in action on Sean’s farm gaining valuable insights to its implementation on farm.
Brian & Eamonn provided a brilliant farm tour of their Lely robots and vector and students got to see it in action.
Thanks again to Sean, Brian, John and Eamonn for their time and knowledge.

These 3 suckler cows are to be sold at Skibbereen Mart on Friday 30th October 2026. All three cows are AI bred, 5 stars for replacement index and are being sold as they are surplus to requirements of the college.

Tuesday night saw our ladies footballers and men’s hurling team out in action in Cahir playing against Kildalton Agricultural college.

Despite very wet conditions the girls team played a brilliant game of football coming away with a fantastic win 🏐

The men’s team put up a strong fight but unfortunately missed out on the win 🏑

Well done to both teams for participating and to Miriam Dineen & Patrick McCarthy for managing the teams.

Last week our advanced dairy cert and apprenticeship students went to Cork to visit sales and .irl fencing.
They got two brilliant talks and practical sessions.
We’d like to thank Derry, Tony, David and Tim from South Coast and James and Paul from Gallagher fencing for their time and knowledge.
