UCC PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY SOCIETY AGM πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€βš–οΈ

Teach is not gonna believe this. After two years of hard work, I must relinquish my role as UCC Physoc PRO πŸ˜”πŸ˜ž Please pray for me in this very difficult time πŸ™πŸ§Žβ€βž‘οΈπŸ›

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE !! If you have ever wanted to be a bigger part of the wonderful events we host, now is your chance ! In the Physics AGM on Monday 23rd March, you can go for one of the many roles listed in slide 2 of this post ! city boyyy

To go for a role, you must compose a speech under 1 minute on why you'd like to go for any roles you wish to go for, and present it for the room to vote on !

Even if you're not going for a role you are free to come along and vote ! We want the Physoc members to have as much of a say as the committee itself !

Hope to see you all there, and hope to see a worthy candidate to pass down the helm of Physoc PRO to πŸ«³πŸ‘‘

THE ANNUAL INTEGRATION BEE RETURNS 🐝🐝🐝

Ever since clavicle got brutally framemogged by an ASU frat leader in the wild I think we've all needed something to cheer us up. Well look no further !

Centuries of arithmetic genius will converge on the 24th of February 2026 where UCC's greatest minds (maths and physics students) will gather to compete at one of mathematics greatest creations - the Integral. Lecturers are also technically allowed to come but they never do :(

It is said goliaths of calculus like Newton and Leibniz wracked their minds to develop the integral just for this very moment - The UCC Integration Bee, our annual competition where I make absurd brainrot integrals for you all to try and solve.

So join us in Western Gateway Building G05 at 6:15 pm for this monumental event. You don't have to be very good at integration. Most of us use integral-calculator.com for our assignments anyway.

There will be free pizza for those who attend ! And the winner will probably get something idk ill figure it out later just come for the pizza and fun πŸ•πŸ•πŸ•πŸ•

WELCOME BACK SOCIAL πŸ—£πŸ—£πŸ—£

What's that ? SOUNDS like another Social ! Come to Fransiscan Well on Thursday 22nd of January at 7pm for our 3rd one of the year !

These events give you a fantastic chance to meet lots of other UCC Physics students, and even often a small subset of the lecturers (if you're feeling SOCIAL enough haha (is that joke still funny guys))

You also don't have to be a physics student to go. Whether you're in a closely related course like maths, or as far as can be in OT, as long as you're a Physoc member anyone is free to come.

Only good excuses allowed for those who can't make it ! It would be a long shot to say you can't make it to Fransiscan well, its not like you've to go all the way to Istanbul on the shoe. so BE ON SCENE OR BE GREEN 🟩

THE PHYSICS FORMAL πŸ•΄β™ οΈ

Wait a minute, George ! What is the Physics Formal ? The Physics Formal is a big fancy event for students and staff in the School of Physics to gather and socialise, but this time while looking fancy. How formal ! πŸŸ¦πŸ’ƒ

This year is a special one because we are celebrating 115 years of the Physics Society ! (The wristbands say 125 because our chairperson is bad at maths)

So meet me at the Metropole on Thursday the 13th of November and sweep all your worries of exams and assignments under the bed for a wonderful night with Physoc. There will be light finger food aswell, and its not going to eat itself ...

Read the post for more info. Links to buy tickets will be put out on the story in the coming days, so keep your two twos peeled πŸ‘πŸ‘.

UCC PHYSOC MEET THE COMMITTEE πŸ•΄πŸ•΄

Often we get questions such as who are the legends of legends behind these beautiful events ? Who is writing all these eloquent articulate captions ? What is Ailish McHugh's favourite musical ? Are magnetic monopoles real ?

All will be answered in the 18 elucidating slides before you, as you meet the diamond dogs of The UCC Physics Society. The hivemind behind all of the wonderful events we host. 🐝

Enjoy the fun facts and faces of all our members, and direct any questions to the comments.

THE HALLOWEEN SOCIAL πŸŽƒπŸ§™β€β™€οΈπŸ§ΉπŸ‘

ARE YOU SERIOUS BAI ? yes i am ! On Wednesday the 29th of October at 7:30 p.m. we will host social number TWO, yes TWO, of this semester. But this time its halloween themed - HOW EVIL πŸ˜ˆπŸŸ¦πŸ’ƒ

Costumes are highly encouraged. Whether you dress up as megamind, the muffin man, marylin monroe or even a magnetic monopole, any costume is welcome 🀯🀯 You don't have to wear a costume though ... but that would be lame ...

The social will be held in Fransiscan Well, so make sure to bring some pennys nickes and dimes for refreshments, amd meet others in the physics society.

If you're feeling SOCIAL (thats the 6th or 7th time ive made this joke) then we'll see you in Fransiscan Well next week !

STARGAZING TRIP TO MOUNT BRANDON 🌠🌌

Did someone say stargazing ? GNARLY ! Our first stargazing trip of the year will be from October 24th to October 26th in the Mount Brandon Hostel.

To sign up, go to the societies portal, sign up events, and click on Physics. Then you should see the event and just click Register.

If you don't know, annually Physoc will go on 2 or 3 🀲 Stargazing trips across both semesters. It's a great place to meet people interested in Physics, but you don't have to study physics to go. From Engineering to Occupational Therapy, anyone is welcome !

We also bring a telescope and hope for clear skies, but its always fun regardless. If not we reserve use of our Tesla Death Ray just for these trips to clear the skies 😍

REGISTERING DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOU A SPOT - Those who receive spots will be emailed and pay for their tickets next week.

THE FERMI PRIZE πŸ†πŸ†πŸ†

Have you ever thought yourself to be the long lost descendant of Italian - American Physicist Enrico Fermi ? Well perhaps now is your chance to find out.

Enrico Fermi was well known for being fantastic at approximate calculations with little data, once estimating the strength of the Trinity test to the correct order of magnitude based on the distance pieces of paper he dropped from his hand flew. Thus every year Fermi now shines down on us lesser mortals as we try to replicate a morsel of what his MEGA MIND could do.

The Fermi Prize is a competition in which you answer questions that are typically back of the envelope calculations. No calculator is allowed - it's purely estimation based on little to no data. how evil 😈

You do not have to be good at physics or maths to come along. THERE WILL BE FREE PIZZA FOR EVERYONE AND PRIZE VOUCHERS FOR THE WINNERS ASWELL.

Join us for the Fermi Prize on Monday 20th October in KANE G18 at 6:45PM

Have you ever asked yourself questions like : What am I gonna do after my degree ? How do I get into a PhD ? Who is Physoc's new Postgrad Rep Paddy O'Callaghan ?

Well all will be answered on Tuesday 7th October at 7 pm in KANE G01, where 5 of UCC Physics' alumni who have all pursued postgraduate education will talk about their experiences in doing so.

This talk is aimed mainly at 3rd and 4th years because their days are numbered... but those of you in 1st year and 2nd year who are interested are also invited to come along to see if doing a PhD is for you.

To see more information about each speaker, read through the slides in the post.
