There is no one type of person who becomes an occupational therapist.

Some people discover the profession early. Others arrive through a different degree, career or life experience that leads them towards a new professional direction.

As Yvonne Phelan, Programme Lead and qualified Occupational Therapist, explains, people enter occupational therapy from a wide range of backgrounds. Those experiences can shape the perspective, understanding and purpose they bring to the profession.

Awarded by Health Sciences University, the MSc Occupational Therapy (Pre-registration) combines specialist learning, practical skills development and clinical placements, preparing graduates for a respected and meaningful career in healthcare.

Whether occupational therapy has always been the destination or has only recently begun to feel possible, there is no single pathway into the profession.

Your experience could be the beginning of yours.

Confidence isn’t something you have. It’s something you build.

Presenting your ideas, sharing your perspective and stepping outside your comfort zone are all part of preparing for a career in the business of fashion. Through practical learning and opportunities to present, students develop the confidence and professional skills that stay with them long after graduation.

For BA (Hons) Fashion Management student Sam Whelan, developing his presentation skills became one of the biggest takeaways from his time at Portobello Institute, showing that confidence grows with experience and that there’s a place in the fashion industry for everyone who’s passionate about it

A look inside our Speech and Language Therapy clinic 🧸

Our MSc Speech and Language Therapy (Pre-registration) students were familiarising themselves with the clinic’s play materials, appraising each resource and considering the communication goals and intervention plans it could support.

While it may look like play, activities like these help students develop important clinical reasoning, professional judgement and practical skills.

By connecting classroom learning with realistic clinical scenarios, students build the confidence and capability needed to progress towards a career as a speech and language therapist.
