What does studying fashion look like beyond the classroom?

For Portobello Institute business of fashion students, practical work experience is an important part of the learning journey.

In second year, students can have opportunities to travel to international industry events such as Première Vision Paris, where they can see textiles first-hand, explore sourcing and quality, and better understand the commercial decisions behind fashion products.

Experiences like this help students connect what they are learning with the realities of the fashion industry and see how areas such as materials, cost, product development and buying come together in practice.

Still considering your next step after the Leaving Cert?

Applications are still open for our BA (Hons) Fashion Buying and Merchandising programme, with limited places remaining for the upcoming academic year - get in touch today or share this with someone who might be interested in a career in fashion!

“With good organisation, communication, and the right support, it is possible to work towards your career goals while continuing to pursue other things that matter to you.”

A huge congratulations and the very best of luck to Portobello Institute MSc Speech and Language Therapy (Pre-registration) student, Faith Oviawe, as she heads to South Africa to represent Ireland at the FISU World University Rugby 7’s Championships.

Faith has continued to compete at the highest level in rugby alongside her postgraduate studies, representing both Connacht and Ireland while working towards her goal of becoming a speech and language therapist.

Her journey is a brilliant example of what it can look like to pursue two ambitions side by side, bringing the discipline, resilience, teamwork and communication she has developed through rugby into her future career in SLT.

We are incredibly proud to see Faith representing Ireland on the international stage and wish her and the team every success in South Africa.

Thinking about becoming an occupational therapist (OT) but not sure what the path actually looks like?

Following our recent MSc Occupational Therapy (Pre-registration) Information Evening, we’ve pulled together 5 key takeaways for anyone considering taking the next step towards becoming an occupational therapist.

1. What does an occupational therapist do?

Occupational therapists help people take part in the everyday activities that matter to them, from daily living and education to rehabilitation, independence and community participation.

2. What will I study?

Across the two-year MSc, students build knowledge in occupational therapy practice, physical and mental health, assessment and intervention planning, rehabilitation, assistive technology and person-centred, evidence-based practice.

3. What does ‘Pre-registration’ actually mean?

The MSc is designed to prepare students with the academic knowledge, practical experience and clinical skills needed before applying for professional registration. In Ireland, occupational therapists are regulated by CORU, while in the UK they are regulated by the HCPC.

4. What do occupational therapy placements involve?

Students complete 1,000 hours of practice education across four supervised placement blocks, gaining experience across a range of healthcare and community settings.

5. Where can occupational therapy take you?

Career opportunities can span rehabilitation, mental health, paediatrics, disability services, community care, services for older people and specialist areas such as neurology, hand therapy and assistive technology.
