Listening to communities and shaping the future of allied health education.

Portobello Institute's MSc Occupational Therapy (Pre-reg.) Programme Lead, Yvonne Phelan, and MSc Speech and Language Therapy (Pre-reg.) lecturer, Jennifer Grundulis, recently attended Rare Ireland 2026, joining families, individuals and healthcare professionals in conversations about improving access to healthcare services for people living with rare conditions.

Jennifer shared insights into Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), while Yvonne introduced plans for our developing student-led allied health clinic in Dublin.

The conference also provided an important opportunity to hear directly from families and invite their perspectives on the future clinic, helping ensure community experiences inform its development.

A valuable day of learning, listening and connecting education with the real needs of the people our future healthcare professionals will serve.

🌍 Happy World Occupational Therapy Day!

Occupational therapists play a vital role in helping people overcome challenges, build independence and participate in the everyday activities that matter most to them.

To mark World Occupational Therapy Day, we’re highlighting some important statistics that demonstrate the reach of the profession and the growing need for occupational therapy services.

🌍 680,000 occupational therapists worldwide
The World Federation of Occupational Therapists represents approximately 680,000 occupational therapists through its global network.

🇮🇪 3,900 occupational therapists registered in Ireland
According to CORU’s State of the Register report, approximately 3,900 occupational therapists were registered in Ireland as of 30 June 2025.

💛 Over 30,000 children awaiting an initial assessment
HSE figures reported in September 2026 recorded 30,148 children awaiting an initial occupational therapy assessment in Ireland, highlighting the significant pressure on services.

These figures highlight the importance of occupational therapy and the need for skilled professionals who can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

It was a pleasure to meet so many fourth, fifth and sixth year students, chatting about their interests, career ambitions and the different study options and pathways available at Portobello Institute.

Raya and Tom were there representing Portobello Institute, speaking with students about opportunities across health science, sport, education and the business of fashion.

Whether students are just beginning to explore their interests or already have a career in mind, these conversations are a valuable opportunity to discover where their ambitions could take them.

For Portobello Institute alumna Stacey Kelly, continuing her education helped her take the next step in her career.

Starting on the service desk at Apleona, Stacey balanced full-time work with studying facilities management at Portobello Institute. Shortly after qualifying, her commitment to professional development was recognised with a promotion to Facilities Manager.

Today, Stacey is Director of Facilities at Apleona, a reflection of her years of practical experience, continued learning and dedication to her career.

We were delighted to attend the IGC Midlands College & Careers Fair at TUS Athlone Campus today, meeting students from across the Midlands and helping them explore the different study options and career pathways available to them! 🎓

The event brought together education providers and industry representatives from across Ireland, giving students the opportunity to explore their interests and start thinking about their future careers.

From concept to camera, this is what putting fashion theory into practice looks like at Portobello Institute.

From developing editorial concepts for unique fashion shoots to bringing their vision to life working together, students consider the mood, styling, location and creative direction before planning how the final editorial will look, feel and tell their creative story.

Collaboration is a key part of the process, with first-year fashion students stepping in to model the looks while the second-year students direct the shoot alongside a professional photographer.

The result is an editorial fashion project shaped by the students from the initial concept through to the final images, giving them practical experience of the creative process behind a professional fashion shoot where business meets fashion.
