Creative Futures Academy

Some briefs arrive with real opportunity, and this was one of them. NCAD’s new Strategic Plan 𝘾𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙚, 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚, 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙚 was designed by our own students: Aisling Strzoda, Cian Giles, Ella Mc Nulty and Oisín Allen, all part of Bureau+, a research driven, student managed studio within our Studio+ programme, where students take on real commercial and cultural projects.

The brief: design a foundational document outlining NCAD's purpose, mission, values, goals and objectives, for an audience of staff, students, stakeholders, and a wider national and international public. It had to be accessible, legible and engaging, while speaking clearly to NCAD's unique position as an independent art and design college, and to the importance of art and design in today's social and political climate. The scope spanned format exploration, print methods, colour, imagery and graphics, plus a full digital handover for web implementation.

Aisling, Cian, Ella and Oisín worked directly with senior management, presenting and refining concepts based on feedback from multiple stakeholders, collaborating via Miro, group critiques and regular tutor input. Four contributors, one cohesive outcome, all while completing a full programme of additional modules. Early directions were tested and reworked through deep research, iteration, layout tests and printed experiments. Decisions were made by testing, not by committing too early.

What emerged balances boldness with clarity: expressive, but never at the expense of the message.

The strategy then made the leap to digital, with the website brought to life by NCAD alumni and brilliant designers at Post Studio.

NCAD Gallery is delighted to present 𝘽𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜, an open incubation-residency event by artist 𝗩𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗯𝘂𝗿𝘆.

Vivian is currently the recipient of the Incubation Residency award at the NCAD Gallery throughout July 2026. She is also a lecturer in First-Year Studies and in Fine Art Sculpture and Expanded Practice at NCAD.

Hansbury's practice navigates the intersection of materiality and memory, utilising sculpture, drawing and installation to explore themes of identity, environment, and recollection. Her work is a tactile, process-led journey, often engaging with the evocative landscape of the Irish boglands as a metaphor for submerged personal history and bi-racial identity. Through the deliberate juxtaposition of diverse materials—from cast bronze and glass moss castings to willow and jesmonite—she creates visceral, formally resolved objects that invite contemplation on our physical and social connection to the world.

Hansbury's commitment to sustainable, material-led inquiry was a focus of her participation in the 2026 NCAD Research Exhibition and Programme. Her project, 𝘞𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸: 𝘋𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴, investigates the integration of traditional wickerwork knowledge into contemporary art practice, exploring low-impact, environmentally responsible construction methods.

Her recent solo exhibitions include 𝘛𝘈𝘕𝘈𝘞𝘐𝘕 at the Custom House Gallery, Westport (2026), 𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦 at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar (2023), and 𝘉𝘢𝘩𝘪 𝘒𝘶𝘣𝘰 at The Complex, Dublin (2023). She is a member of the Independent Studios, Eustace St, Dublin.

The National College of Art and Design invites proposals for 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹: 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, a two-day conference of talks and workshops exploring outdoor ecological and experiential learning sites connected to museums, cultural institutions, community spaces, schools, and third-level campuses.

Situated at the intersection of art, design, education, and environmental thought and action, the conference reflects on how such sites operate as a "third space" — proposing ways to reworld, think otherwise, and work towards liveable futures.

This event forms part of NCAD’s contribution to the ‘Museum of the Commons’, a research project undertaken by L'Internationale Online, a European confederation of museums, arts organisations and universities and co-funded by the EU. Launched in February 2022, the ‘Museum of the Commons’ runs until February 2027. It involves programming (exhibitions, seminars, schools, residencies, public programmes), research and publishing (through L’Internationale Online), and communication.Nationale, co-funded by the European Union.

John's story highlights an alternative pathway into the design industry, one shaped by lived experience, persistence, and the ability to translate skills across sectors. After more than 25 years managing bookstores in South Africa, John Fawcett Peck made a bold decision to leave an established career and return to education, relocating to Ireland to study Product Design at NCAD.

On how his retail background shaped his approach to design:

💬 "Managing bookstores for many years gave me a practical understanding of how people navigate a space and interact with merchandise. I learned how small changes in layout could significantly affect customer behaviour. I also developed a strong understanding of the supply chain and how one small obstacle can create disruptions down the line."

On the barriers he faced breaking into the creative industries as a mature graduate:

💬 "The biggest barrier was getting my application seen instead of scanned by AI systems that would label me as 'too old' or 'too expensive', as if they could just get someone younger and cheaper. I relied on my strength of connecting with people, because I knew my path wouldn't be the same as a younger graduate's. For me, the key was keeping busy and staying visible. I was determined to get out of the house and network, which ultimately paid off."

On how networking led to his current role at StudioD Architects, John reflected:

💬 "Sometimes it takes a village and sometimes just a street. By helping out in the neighbourhood, talking to people, and making connections, things started to happen. My neighbour Greg Tisdall, one of the partners at StudioD Architects, called me and asked, 'Have you landed a job yet? I have a proposal, can I email it to you.'"

𝘾𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙚, 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚, 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙚 is the National College of Art and Design's new five-year strategic plan, and it's already in motion. Over the past year, NCAD has been actively progressing work directly tied to the College's four strategic goals, with staff fully immersed in delivering them:

Here's what's happening:

🔹Commencing Phase 1 of our strategic campus development, strengthening our campus and facilities for teaching and learning.

🔹CO-CREATE Ireland, a €4 million North South Research Project in partnership with Belfast School of Art at Ulster University, officially launched on 18 June, building an island-wide network for new thinking and making in art and design.

🔹Rolling out major institutional projects funded by the HEA Targeted Enhancement Fund, supporting the realisation of 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦, 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦, 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦 across all four goals.

🔹Our Alumni Connectivity programme, launched in 2025, continues to grow stronger, now including the Alumni Impact Award, a new Mentoring Programme, and events in Dublin, New York, Milan and London.

🔹Expanding NCAD Design Labs, our CIVIC and HEALTH labs, deepening partnerships with national agencies and Government Departments on civic engagement and healthcare.

🔹Strengthening the Creative Futures Academy in partnership with IADT and UCD, and renewing our strategic alliance with UCD, established in 2010.

🔹Launching new postgraduate programmes across the Schools of Design and Fine Art.

🔹Expanding our research office and research community.

The National College of Art and Design (NCAD) is delighted to announce a new 5-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London, a landmark step in strengthening ties between two leading art and design institutions.

This partnership sets the stage for meaningful collaboration across sector leadership and specialist art and design education, teaching, curriculum and educational practice, research and doctoral collaboration, student opportunity and progression, institutional exchange and partnership development, civic and creative ecosystems, and other areas of future collaboration.

Together, NCAD and RCA will build a shared platform for creative excellence, opening new doors for students, researchers and educators across both institutions.

We look forward to building on this foundation over the years ahead.
