Recent winner of the Sports Girl of the year at St. Columba’s, Caoimhe Gallen signed off her school career with two more All Ireland Gold medals at the All Ireland Track and Field School Athletics Championships in Tullamore over the weekend in the Senior Girls Hammer (54.91m) and Shot (12.30m). This brings her tally of All Ireland golds as a St. Columba’s student to 7 to add to her unprecendented 10 Ulster School Golds, numerous Ulster and Irish Schools records.
Caoimhe, her older sister Adrienne and mother Sharon Gallen (nee Foley) occupy a special place as the only mother and two daughters who have been All Ireland Schools Champions.
Joseph Ike who is coached by Sharon jumped the same height (1.85m) as the Gold medallist in the Intermediate Boys High Jump but lost out on countback and won the bronze in a competitive Inter Boys Shot Putt with 13.55m.
Odhran Mc Brearty also took bronze in arguably the race of the meet in the Senior Boys 5000m with a fantastic time of 14m 50.81s. He is eligible in the same race next year.
Emily Kelly was an unlucky 4th in the Senior Girls 400m Hurdles with 1m 2.57s. Páraic McGettigan was 5th in the Senior Boys 2000m Steeplechase( 6m 48.72s) and Saorla Gilligan 8th in the Intermediate Girls 3000m with 11m 14.06s
