Recent winner of the Sports Girl of the year at St. Columba’s, Caoimhe Gallen signed off her school career with two more All Ireland Gold medals at the All Ireland Track and Field School Athletics Championships in Tullamore over the weekend in the Senior Girls Hammer (54.91m) and Shot (12.30m). This brings her tally of All Ireland golds as a St. Columba’s student to 7 to add to her unprecendented 10 Ulster School Golds, numerous Ulster and Irish Schools records.

Caoimhe, her older sister Adrienne and mother Sharon Gallen (nee Foley) occupy a special place as the only mother and two daughters who have been All Ireland Schools Champions.

Joseph Ike who is coached by Sharon jumped the same height (1.85m) as the Gold medallist in the Intermediate Boys High Jump but lost out on countback and won the bronze in a competitive Inter Boys Shot Putt with 13.55m.

Odhran Mc Brearty also took bronze in arguably the race of the meet in the Senior Boys 5000m with a fantastic time of 14m 50.81s. He is eligible in the same race next year.

He also played a key role in the development of the school, introducing the Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) programme to St. Columba's College and helping to create opportunities for countless young people.

As we reach the end of the school year, we extend our sincere thanks to Bernie Rowan on her retirement from St. Columba's College.

Bernie has been at the heart of the school community since 1983, serving generations of students, parents and staff as school secretary with dedication, professionalism and care. Her support and kindness have been felt by everyone who has passed through the school office.

Bernie’s connection to St. Columba's runs even deeper. She was a student here herself, completed her secretarial training, and did her work experience in the school before beginning a lifetime of service that has spanned over four decades. In that time, she has become the longest-serving staff member in the history of the school.

She has always been known for her kindness, efficiency and willingness to help, particularly in supporting new staff as they settled into school life.

We thank Bernie Rowan for her extraordinary commitment to St. Columba's College and wish her every happiness, good health and fulfilment in her retirement.

She will be deeply missed by all in our school community.
