Congratulations to our Dr Zahra Haghighi and her SapienCE and non-SapienCE coauthors on the new publication in the 'Proceedings of the Royal Society B' titled 'Palaeoproteomic investigation of archaeological sediments associated with ochre use in the Middle Stone Age of southern Africa'.
A new story about this article and the research behind it is also available on SapienCE's web page here:

Traces of eland proteins have been detected from a 60,000-year-old ochre surface in South Africa. The discovery opens a new window into the lives of our ancestors through evidence long hidden in the archaeological record.

SapienCE yesterday participated in the Archaeology Day organized by the Universitetsmuseet i Bergen! We had the great pleasure to join our colleagues from other sections of the University and engage visitors in hands-on practices related to our research in South Africa. Many thanks to postdocs Marzena Cendrowska, Antoine Muller, and Maciej Ehlert for taking part and to everyone who visited our station for a great turnout!

The South African Ambassador to Norway, H.E. Ms Delores Kotze, warmly welcomes the news of Judge Pillay’s being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and extends her heartfelt congratulations. As a South African, this is a particularly proud moment. It is wonderful to see her lifetime of work defending the rights of others receive this recognition.

Judge Pillay grew up in Durban under apartheid and became a lawyer at a time when the law denied her and millions of other South Africans equal rights. She defended people persecuted under that system and later helped build a South Africa founded on equality before the law. She carried that commitment into international courtrooms and the United Nations, speaking up for victims of the gravest crimes, even when it was uncomfortable to do so.

What I admire most is her consistency. Whether in Durban, Arusha or Geneva, her commitment to justice has remained firm. Her life’s work reminds us that lasting peace depends on justice. That lesson carries particular weight for South Africans, given our own history, and I welcome the Nobel Committee’s recognition of her contribution.

As South Africa’s Ambassador to Norway, I find this moment especially meaningful. I look forward to celebrating her achievement here in Oslo and hope to welcome her to Norway in December.

Heartfelt congratulations to Beth Velliky, until recently a postdoc, on her newly awarded Norges forskningsråd FRIPRO grant for her 'Tracking Rock Art and Ochre Environments' (TRACES) project. It could not have gone to a more deserving researcher. We are very proud of her achievement and look forward to following her work! 🫡👏👏👏

Congratulations to the lead author Dr Ellie Pryor and her SapienCE and non-SapienCE co-authors on an exciting new paper in Quaternary Science Reviews, which is a great example of cross-collaboration between climate data, climate modelling and archaeology.
