The University was founded on 8th October 1945, and it provides education in all medical professions. The Medical University of Gdańsk provides education to over 6000 students, PhD and postgraduate students. The University offers: various courses (Premedical Course, English Language Course), Medicine Doctor Programme, Master of Pharmacy Programme, Nursing Programme and the Ph.D. Students have acce

ss to a conveniently situated student residential campus, a modern library and a student club "Medyk". The University is intensively conducting scientific research which is reflected by its high position in the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education ranking and by many awards for its staff. Faculty of Pharmacy with Subfaculty of Laboratory Medicine has been recently recognized by the Polish government as a National Leading Scientific Centre (KNOW).

📣 Meeting of the vascular endothelial medicine experts at the MUG

The Vascular Endothelial Medicine scientific seminar, devoted to contemporary research directions in endothelial function, mechanisms of endothelial injury, and the role of endothelial dysfunction in the development of cardiovascular diseases, was held on 15th May 2026 at the Medical University of Gdańsk. The event brought together researchers working on both fundamental and clinical aspects of vascular biology and microcirculation.

The seminar was opened by its organisers: Prof. Marcin Hellmann, Head of the Department of Cardiac Disease Diagnostics at the MUG, and Assoc. Prof. Barbara Kutryb-Zając, M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc. from the Department of Biochemistry and Coordinator of the MUG Centre for Experimental Cardio-Oncology.

The seminar programme included lectures by recognised experts in endothelial biology and vascular pharmacology.

📣 MUG Strategy 2026–2030

Four strategic objectives, fourteen operational objectives and fifty strategic initiatives – the new Strategy of the Medical University of Gdańsk for 2026–2030 is entering its final development phase. The next steps will include community consultations, an opinion from the University Council and approval by the MUG Senate.

📣 Students from the Student Scientific Association at the Department of Biochemistry, Medical University of Gdansk, working with Dr Paulina Mierzejewska, have published an original research article entitled:

“Post-COVID increase in N-methyl-2-pyridone-5-carboxamide (Met2PY) and N-methyl-4-pyridone-3-carboxamide (Met4PY) associates with inflammatory and endothelial activation markers” in the journal “Nucleosides, Nucleotides and Nucleic Acids”.

The study concerns disturbances in NAD+ metabolism in patients after COVID-19 and identifies N-methyl-2-pyridone-5-carboxamide (Met2PY) – an end-product of NAD+ metabolism – as a potential biomarker enabling identification of Long COVID patients at increased risk of endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular events. These findings may contribute in the future to more personalized risk stratification and monitoring of patients after COVID-19.

📣 Prof. Jacek Kot appointed chair of ESA - European Space Agency expert team on decompression sickness

🚀 The European Space Agency (ESA) has appointed an international expert team on decompression sickness (DCS) in crewed exploration missions. Prof. Jacek Kot from the Faculty of Health Sciences with the Institute of Maritime and Tropical at the MUG, Head of the National Centre for Hyperbaric Medicine – Department of Hyperbaric Medicine and Maritime Rescue at IMMiT (ENG. Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine), has been entrusted with the role of Chair and Coordinator of the team.

The announcement of Prof. Kot’s appointment to this prestigious role coincides with the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the Faculty of Health Sciences with the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine at the MUG, which will take place on 14th–15th May. The jubilee provides an opportunity to emphasise the Faculty’s contribution to the development of modern scientific research and its international standing in the fields of health sciences and maritime medicine.

📣 The largest science picnic in the region returns on the 24th May: The 5th Fahrenheit Science Picnic

More than 8⃣0⃣ educational attractions, a science stage, themed activity zones, and preventive health screenings – the 5th Fahrenheit Science Picnic is approaching, bringing science beyond university walls and laboratories through interactive experiences, discovery, and entertainment for all ages. The Fahrenheit Universities invite visitors to Góra Gradowa on 24th May.
