Happy birthday to Edmond Halley, born on this day in 1656. You may know him best by his discovery, Halley's Comet, last seen in 1986. Next time we'll see it is 2061, so update your google calendar soon so you don't forget.

Halley didn't just look upwards at night and say "hey what's that?" - he used his Big Math Brain to create the first telescopic catalogue of the southern sky; calculated the distance between Earth, Venus and the Sun; made a chart on trade winds with symbols we still use today; and a bunch of other things.

On this day in 1977, the last natural case of smallpox was recorded. Because of a global vaccine program, by 1980 the disease was declared officially eradicated. Three cheers for no smallpox epidemics anymore! Smallpox is gross! And three more cheers for all the helpers, caregivers, and healthcare professionals who keep us safe from gross things and any number of other problems.

Like to solve problems for people? Like to be a helper? Maybe a certificate in Medical Assisting is for you. The projected employment outlook in Oregon for Medical Assistants is +13%, meaning we need more helpers. In just one year (57 total credits) you can be on your way to a healthcare career, keeping your community safe. (From lots of things, not just the gross stuff.)

Hello there! On this day in 2015, Adele released her hit single "Hello," which became the first song to get one million downloads in its first week. Yep, downloads were a thing when we were young. Don't you remember? But don't feel old - take it easy on yourself. Rumour has it someone like you can still set fire to the rain, and maybe go back to college in your 30s or whatever, make a career change, or just follow your interests. Chat with our First Resort and we'll get you off and rolling! In the deep, dark days of winter, it could be nice to warm yourself with plans for college next year.

Happy birthday to Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834), English poet and founder of the Romantic Movement. Ever said "water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink"? That's a Coleridge line, pretty much.
