We are happy that the students enjoyed our escape room activity during SciFest. Thanks go out to our Pi Mu Epsilon officers and some majors who helped in leading out with this!

“I really liked the escape room in mathematics, physics, and the interactivity of all the activities.” That’s how one student summed up SciFEST 2026. 🔬

From Sept. 17–20, 39 high schoolers from five academies spent a weekend on campus under the theme “Cells.” They worked through hands-on STEM labs, flew our new flight simulator and worshipped together at the Kingman Observatory.

On Sabbath, a faith-and-science panel invited them to ask the big questions. Saturday night ended with vespers, a Quiz Bowl and awards in Newbold Auditorium.

Unfortunately we failed to post last week's eigen speaker, Dr. Verrah Otiende, a computational statistician, who lives in Nairobi, Kenya, and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at the United States International University – Africa. She did her undergraduate work in mathematics at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and earned her Master’s and PhD in Statistics at the Pan African University Institute for Basic Sciences Technology and Innovation. She has an active, externally funded research agenda at the intersection of AI, spatial data science, and public health. Her research interest is in Bayesian hierarchical modeling of spatially and temporally structured data. Her doctoral work developed joint spatiotemporal models for HIV and tuberculosis risk across Kenya, and her current fellowship applies the same framework to urban heat exposure.

We enjoyed a wonderful visit with her on campus for a few days!

This week's eigen*Talk will be hosted again by Mathematics and will feature a Zoom presentation by Urmi Duttagupta, a professor in the Mathematics Department at New York College of Technology in City University of New York. Her talk is titled "Criminal Data Network Analysis Using a Graph-theoretic Approach."

Dr. Duttagupta received a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics jointly from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers University and a B.S. in Applied Mathematics from The Ohio State University. Her current research interests include parameter estimation via optimization, infectious disease modeling, applications of graph theory in criminal network analysis, and developing and applying bio-mathematical undergraduate projects. As a strong proponent of undergraduate research, she has mentored over 45 students over the years. As a PI and co-PI, she received numerous prestigious grants, including three major NSF S-STEM grants, six Mathematical Association of America (MAA) National Research Experience for Undergraduates (NREUP) grants, and two Department of Homeland Security (DHS) grants through ORISE, reflecting her dedication and impact in the field. She also has extensive experience advising students and served as the Director of Liberal Arts and Science and the Computer Science Coordinator for several years. In May 2026, she was also honored as a finalist for the Scholar on Campus 2026 Award.
