Welcome to the USCB Nursing page where you will find news and events for students, alumni, and future students!

The USCB program added BSN education to the South Carolina Lowcountry in 2007, graduating its first RN to BSN class in 2009 and the first pre-licensure BSN class in 2011. USCB Nursing is accredited by the commission on collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), which exclusively accredits baccalaureate and higher programs. We offer a student-centered approach to learning, and our small program offers great one on one support from our excellent faculty. Our graduates are employed in in the region and beyond, and highly regarded by employers.

Our senior nursing students enjoyed an inspiring panel featuring professionals from community and public health nursing, as well as members of the Honor Guard Nurses. Students gained valuable insight into the many ways nurses serve, advocate for, and honor their communities and profession.

This week, several UCSB nursing faculty had the honor to present and attend the 2026 International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) conference in Oklahoma City, OK. Dr. Ashley Shroyer & Dr. Suzanne Wurster presented their poster on their disaster simulation titled “Enhancing Disaster Preparedness in Senior-Level Community Nursing Students Through a Multi-Patient Simulation”. Dr. Jalen Manor & Dr. Suzanne Wurster presented their innovations in a session on the “Implementation of a Summative Health Assessment Simulation to Enhance Confidence and Competence in First-Semester Nursing Students”. Our Department Chair, Dr. Wurster also led and interviewed the panel experts for the “Closing Session: Interprofessional Education in Simulation- Practical Strategies and Standards”. Our nursing faculty learned so much about continuing to advance our simulation program at USCB to best serve our BSN students.

🔨 Service learning on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota is a combination of hands-on work and cultural education.

Our group of 7 USCB students and 3 Nursing faculty worked on projects that addressed Lakota Nation community needs. They built a wheelchair ramp, constructed and installed outhouses, installed trailer skirting, and weeded a community garden where eggplant, squash, tomatoes and potatoes grew.

💙 This USCB “study away” experience provided insight into rural health disparities, housing challenges, food access, and social determinants of health while fostering cultural appreciation.

The Sand Sharks left with a deeper understanding of Lakota culture, a greater awareness of social and economic challenges on the reservation, and lasting connections.

💪The group was led by Lynne Hutchison, Anna Carol Ptacin and Ashley Shroyer.
