When two music professors began creating a multimedia performance for America’s 250th anniversary, they started with a simple idea: explore what it means to be American through the songs we sing. 🎶

The result, “I Hear America Singing,” brings together spirituals, work songs, contemporary music, and poetry to explore America’s aspirations, struggles, and ongoing journey toward liberty, unity, and hope.

“People sing when they have strong feelings,” said Julie Gunn, who co-created and is co-directing the show with her husband, Nathan Gunn. “This is about the aspirations, pains, and dramatic hopes of all Americans through time.”

In addition to their roles as professors, the Gunns are renowned opera and musical theater performers and co-directors of the Lyric Theatre program in Chicago. The show — which takes inspiration and its name from the Walt Whitman poem of the same name — features more than a dozen Illinois faculty members and alumni, both onstage and behind the scenes.

“I Hear America Singing” will be at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts Sept. 10-11.

What does a day at look like for 50 high school students and recent graduates from Chicago’s Little Village? A little veterinary medicine, a lot of hands-on learning, and plenty of animal encounters.🩺🐾

Through the Chicago Village Bus Program, the visitors recently spent the day at the College of Veterinary Medicine exploring anatomy, practicing bandaging skills, and meeting wildlife ambassadors, including snakes, owls, and an opossum named Pesto.

The program does more than introduce students to veterinary medicine; it creates opportunities, builds confidence, and shows young people from diverse backgrounds that they belong in higher education.

For DVM candidate Natalie Nicole Lopez, volunteering with the program hits close to home. As a first-generation college student, she rarely saw people with backgrounds similar to hers pursuing higher education and careers in veterinary medicine. Now, she gets to be that example for someone else. 🔶🔷

For millions who’ve stepped away from exercise, getting back into a routine can feel like starting from scratch. But researchers have discovered that your body may remember more than you think. 🏃🏿

A first-of-its-kind study, led by health and kinesiology Assistant Professor Diego Hernandez-Saavedra, shows the liver retains a molecular “memory” of past workouts, helping the body respond more effectively when exercise resumes.

The finding could lead to new ways of understanding — and potentially improving — metabolic health and conditions, such as fatty liver disease. It also offers an encouraging message for anyone getting back into a routine.

“Start again, and don’t be discouraged by the gap,” Hernandez-Saavedra said. “The biology suggests that your previous exercise history is not gone; it’s simply dormant.”
