Archaeology faculty member Dr. Sarah Platt and students recently visited the historic Fort Johnson Powder Magazine, originally constructed in 1708.

During their visit, students met with an archaeologist from local cultural resource management firm Brockington and Associates to learn about archaeological monitoring and the importance of cultural sustainability. The visit offered a firsthand look at cultural resource management, the leading career field for archaeologists in the United States.

The Division of Student Affairs recently presented the August G. Swarat II Leadership Award to four outstanding students at the College of Charleston. Two of them are LCWA students!

The award is presented every year to students who exhibit strong leadership skills, involvement in the College and a commitment to community service.

Lauren Eells, a political science major and international studies minor, is student government vice president, serves on the Student Sustainability Collaborative and has held leadership roles in both Political Science Club and Model United Nations. She is also an INTL intern!

Skyelar Campbell, an International Scholar, is a double major in international studies and biology with University Honors. She is president of the Zeta Gamma chapter of her sorority, Chi Omega, and participates in Charleston Fellows and extracurriculars such as Charleston Campus Ambassadors. She also works and interns at MUSC. In recognition of her academic achievements, leadership and campus involvement, the Panhellenic Council named her its Member of the Year.

Celebrate CofC Homecoming with LCWA! The School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs invites you to join us Friday, November 6 for the Global Citizen Award and Alumni Panel.

From intelligence and security to travel, business and technology, hear from College of Charleston alumni Nicole Lewis ’91, Jessica Alig ’00, Kate Otter ’06 and James Hamilton ’12 as they share their career journeys and the impact of their experiences at the College. Explore professional paths, gain insight into life after graduation and hear the lessons learned along the way.

We’ll also celebrate the presentation of the second annual Global Citizen Award to Kerrigan von Carlowitz ’23. As a placemaking specialist with the International Rescue Committee in New York, von Carlowitz works with local organizations to support community development and migrant advocacy.

Alum Jack Watson (’24) was recently accepted into the Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA) at The American University in Cairo!

CASA is a competitive immersion program for advanced learners, offering rigorous Arabic language instruction complemented by cultural engagement to help students achieve near-native fluency. Watson is the first student from the College of Charleston to be accepted into the program.

The opportunity also brings a special connection to LCWA: Asian Studies Program Director Garrett Davidson is also an alumnus of CASA himself.

"As a student in the CASA@AUC program, I benefit from rigorous coursework accompanied by cultural engagement over the course of twelve months living and studying in Cairo, Egypt. I am able to take advantage of all of the great aspects which come with living in such a lively city, developing my Arabic while participating in the rich cultural life in Cairo. Through the program, I focus on both Modern Standard Arabic and the Egyptian dialect in my courses which focus on issues within Egypt and the Arab world. This opportunity to invest deeply into learning Arabic for such a long period of time is invaluable, and the fact that I can focus on reaching superior proficiency in Arabic while living in the cultural capital of Cairo makes the experience even that much better," said Watson.

The Mroz Global Leadership Institute's speaker series continues this month with "From Charleston to the World: What Diplomacy Actually Looks Like."

Join us this month for a talk from Dan Thompson, a career diplomat currently serving at the Office of Marine Conservation in the U.S. Department of State. The discussion will focus on the local-global connections, environmental preservation, economic security and international ocean issues.

Last Monday, the Mroz Global Leadership Institute was honored to welcome Elizabeth Kennedy Trudeau to campus. As Director of Global Policy at the George W. Bush Institute and a former career diplomat, Trudeau shared stories from her career during her presentation, “Soft Power in Hard Times: Leveraging American Ideas in a Complex World,” while offering advice to students interested in pursuing careers in international affairs.

The talk highlighted how connection, communication and relationship-building can help navigate challenges and create opportunities.
