🎨🔍 What started as a class project turned into a real-life art mystery.

Art and Design students at the University of Southern Indiana, led by Dr. Sommer Hallquist, uncovered new clues about a 1969 panel painting in the University Art Collection, originally labeled as St. Dorothea, but now believed to depict St. Ursula.

Working alongside the Radiologic and Imaging Sciences Department, students used X-radiography to look beneath the painting’s surface, combining art history and science to investigate the work’s origins and authenticity.

The interdisciplinary project gave students hands-on experience in research, collaboration and discovery—while the mystery of the St. Ursula panel continues to unfold.

Lisa Ryan-Hutton’s journey back to art is a story of reinvention and resilience. After a 30-year career in marketing research, she enrolled at the University of Southern Indiana to pursue long-held interests in psychology and art, initially with plans for a Master’s in Art Therapy. Life circumstances, including the loss of her husband, led her to pause those plans—but nearly a decade later, she returned with renewed purpose, this time working toward a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art, focusing on painting and ceramics. She describes her experience at USI as transformative, reigniting her creativity and sense of direction.

Now planning to graduate in 2027, Lisa remains deeply engaged in both her studies and the broader arts community. She is exploring future paths that include graduate school, volunteering and continued artistic growth, while encouraging others to take risks and follow their passions. Her story reflects the power of lifelong learning and serves as a reminder that it’s never too late to rediscover what inspires you.

With the release of "This Vast Enterprise: A New History of Lewis & Clark", USI alumnus Craig Fehrman is reshaping how readers understand a familiar chapter of American history. Growing up in southern Indiana, Fehrman arrived at USI through a friend’s recommendation and quickly immersed himself in campus life—working as a resident assistant, editing The Shield and engaging in student organizations. Inspired by faculty in English and psychology, he went on to double major, developing the curiosity and critical thinking skills that would later define his work as a writer and historian.

Today, Fehrman draws on those experiences to craft deeply researched, human-centered narratives. He credits USI not only for strengthening his research and storytelling abilities but for fostering meaningful connections that shaped his path. His advice to students is simple: read widely and invest in relationships. For Fehrman, success grew from a combination of persistence, intellectual curiosity and the people who supported him along the way—an experience that continues to influence his work and perspective.
