🎬 USI is making its mark at the 2026 Nashville Film Festival!

Only the Lord Will Set You Free, a short film featuring the work of USI Communications and Media faculty, students and alumni, will screen as part of the festival’s Graveyard Shorts program, running September 24-30.

Produced by Dr. McManus Woodend, Assistant Professor of Digital Media, the film features current USI student Colin Millsap ’26 on sound design and location sound. USI alumni Jordan Barclay ’05, Esther Addis ’25 and Kaz Mull ’25 also contributed to the production in photography, acting and production roles.

While the film is not a USI production, the project highlights the real-world, on-set experiences students and alumni are gaining as they prepare for careers in the film industry.

With USI’s Film concentration launching this year, opportunities like these are helping students build experience, connections and careers beyond the classroom. 🎥

Learn more about the film and find screening information through the Nashville Film Festival schedule. https://nashvillefilmfestival.org/2026-festival-schedule/

🎓 From undecided student to doctoral researcher!

Emily Thurman ’24 came to USI unsure of her career path. Today, she’s pursuing a doctoral degree in anthropology in Arizona and conducting award-winning research.

At USI, Emily found her passion through hands-on archaeological research, internships and mentorship from anthropology faculty. Her experiences helped her discover a path she never expected and prepare for a future in research.

Her advice to students? "You don’t have to have everything figured out when you start college. Stay open to opportunities; they might lead you somewhere you never expected."

We’re proud to see where Emily’s USI journey has taken her! 🦅💙

Setting up Convocation by day. Being a freshman at Convocation by night. 🎓

Caleb Olesen, an incoming history major, had a unique first day at USI! Caleb works for Concept Sound & Light, the team responsible for setting up the arena for Convocation. After helping get everything ready, he returned later that day, not as part of the crew, but as a brand-new USI freshman!

Talk about a full-circle first day. Welcome to USI, Caleb! 🦅💙
