👏 Meet the newest Southwest Indiana AHEC Scholars Cohort!

The 2026-28 cohort kicked off their journey with an orientation at Ronald McDonald House Charities. Scholars heard from a guest speaker about the services provided by Matthew 25 and began building connections with fellow students who share a passion for improving healthcare access and outcomes.

Representing nursing, medicine, physician assistant, physical therapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy and social work, these students come from the University of Southern Indiana, University of Evansville, Marian University and Purdue University.

We can't wait to see the impact this talented group will make across Indiana and beyond! 💙

It takes a community to create change. Last week, USI health professions students experienced this during a powerful Community Action Poverty Simulation, hosted by Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC).

This interactive, hands-on learning experience gave students a glimpse into the daily challenges faced by individuals and families living in poverty. Participants took on the roles of family members, navigating real-life situations, such as finding employment, paying bills, securing housing, accessing transportation, obtaining food and meeting other basic needs with limited financial resources.

The simulation helps participants recognize that poverty is more than a financial issue. It can affect access to education, healthcare, employment, housing and other essential resources. Most importantly, it encourages empathy, challenges assumptions and inspires conversations about how individuals, organizations and communities can work together to create meaningful change.

Thank you to Holly's House, United Way of Southwestern Indiana, University of Evansville, Find Missing Peace, Evansville Housing Authority, University of Southern Indiana and The Chestnut Group for being part of this important experience and for your continued commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. 💙
