Evaluation Results Reflect Strength of Purdue Northwest Elementary Education Literacy Program

Purdue University Northwest’s School of Education and Counseling has earned national recognition for excellence in preparing future teachers, particularly in literacy instruction.

Last fall, the program received an “A” rating from the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) for its Elementary/Special Education undergraduate program. Teacher candidates learn Science of Reading strategies in their coursework and apply them in real classroom settings with local teachers.

The program also completed a comprehensive review by Teacher Prep Inspection–US (TPI-US) that took place last month to evaluate its alignment with the Science of Reading framework. Over five days, a national review team observed and interviewed student teachers, cooperating teachers, university supervisors, administrators, faculty, and alumni.

The final report recognized the program’s strong literacy instruction, awarding “Good” ratings in all related areas. The review team also provided recommendations to strengthen clinical practice and support continuous improvement.

Dr. David Pratt, Director of the School of Education and Counseling, noted that the results "reflect the faculty’s commitment to high-quality literacy instruction, strong clinical placements, and a data-driven approach to improvement".

Building on this momentum, the school plans to work with TPI-US in Fall 2026 to enhance training for supervisors and mentors and improve the consistency of feedback related to literacy instruction.
