UMKC School of Nursing & Health Studies

UMKC School of Nursing & Health Studies The UMKC School of Nursing & Health Studies, offers students an environment rich in opportunities In 1995 we introduced a PhD curriculum. etc.

The School of Nursing and Health Studies has been an integral part of UMKC for more than 50 years. Beginning in 1972 with the institution of the Master of Science in Nursing program and followed shortly by the founding of the School of Nursing in 1974, SoNHS has a long and illustrious history. In 1981 we introduced our online RN-BSN Program, one of the first of its kind in the nation, setting a p

recedent for the future of education in nursing. Then in 2001 we began our Pre-Licensure BSN track, followed by the start of our Doctor of Nursing practice program in 2007, which completed the collegiate path from new student to doctorate. After establishing ourselves as a recognized and and exceptional school of nursing, we saw an even greater opportunity to offer our students, a Bachelor in Health Studies, which was introduced in 2011. With the addition of this program, we could allow our students to get a broader education of the Health Sciences world and help lead them down the path of whichever area of study the chose, whether it be the completion of the well-rounded and prepared BHS graduate, a pre-nursing track, pre-medicine. In 2013 we officially changed our name to the School of Nursing and Health Studies, to further exemplify the full breadth of knowledge and education we had to share with prospective students and the community. We have been growing and developing every year since the beginning in 1972, and are proud to count ourselves as a strong and eminent establishment within UMKC and Kansas City as whole. And we will continue striving to deliver an education that is nothing but exceptional to any student who walks through our doors (real or virtual).

Congratulations to our faculty member RaeAnn Anderson, Ph.D., who received the Research Catalyst Award at the inaugural UMKC Research and Innovation Excellence Awards. The award recognizes Anderson for securing her first major external grant, a nearly $2 million grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to study how survivors of sexual violence move from screening to care. Her work addresses a critical gap in support systems, focusing on how to ensure survivors are not only identified, but meaningfully supported through recovery.
