The Global Studies program at Bethel University offers both long and short term study abroad opportunities for all members of our learning community. Students, staff, faculty, alumni, family, and friends of Bethel are eligible to participate in the program. High school students can even earn college credit for their participation.

Meet Joel: 47 years in journalism, 11 countries with Bethel, and apparently not very good at retirement. 😂🌎

Joel T. Washburn is a volunteer assistant with Bethel Global Studies, a longtime photojournalist and newspaper publisher, and someone who knows a thing or two about seeing the world.

His first trip with us was to Cuba in 2016. After spotting an ad for the program, he reached out to see if he could tag along with the students. Stacie made it happen, and Joel has been traveling with us ever since! He's even returned to Cuba four times. 🇨🇺

Ten years and 11 countries later, it's the people who keep him coming back.

“Supporting young adults as they explore and learn about the world remains a true passion of mine.”

When he's not traveling or helping with Global Studies, Joel still writes for his family's newspaper and spends time with his wife Teresa (also a Global Studies traveler!), their daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren.

We're pretty lucky to have him on the team. Thanks for being part of the adventure, Joel! 💜

France is calling, and Dr. Kyra is answering. 🇫🇷🥐

For the first time, Bethel University is offering a Maymester in France, and we're pretty excited about what Dr. Kyra Sanchez-Clapper has planned!

From the streets of Paris to the history, art, and culture that make France such an incredible place to learn, this is an opportunity to experience what you've been studying instead of just reading about it.
