The Global Studies program at Bethel University offers both long and short term study abroad opportunities for all members of our learning community. Students, staff, faculty, alumni, family, and friends of Bethel are eligible to participate in the program. High school students can even earn college credit for their participation.

From Tokyo to Mount Fuji, Kyoto to Nara, and everywhere in between, our Japan travelers experienced history, culture, innovation, and daily life in one of the world’s most fascinating countries. 🇯🇵🌏

Along the way, they participated in tea ceremonies, explored ancient shrines and temples, learned to make sushi and okonomiyaki, connected with students at Osaka Jogakuin University, discovered the surprising textile origins of Toyota, and gained a deeper understanding of Japan’s people, traditions, and global influence.

Thank you to our incredible travelers for embracing every opportunity to learn, explore, and grow.

The trip may be over, but the lessons and memories will last a lifetime.

BU Global Studies travelers exploring two of Kyoto’s most iconic sites: Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) and Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine.

From a Zen temple covered in gold leaf to thousands of vibrant orange torii gates winding through the mountains, the day offered a glimpse into the history, traditions, and beauty that make Kyoto one of Japan’s most visited destinations.

BU Global Studies travelers are in Nagoya learning the art of the tea ceremony, visiting a shrine said to house a legendary sword discovered inside an eight-headed serpent, exploring the surprising textile origins of Toyota, and sharing shabu-shabu around the dinner table.

A 1,000-year-old shrine. Mount Fuji. Traditional kimonos. New friends from Illinois 🇯🇵🌏

Today, Bethel University Global Studies travelers explored Mount Fuji, visited Fujisan Komitake Shrine, took a cruise across Lake Ashi, and learned that wearing a kimono is harder than it looks!

Best of all? Sharing experiences that make the world feel a little smaller.
