For junior Jude Copeland, Montevallo means opportunities to find themself and their talent for screenwriting along the way. The mass communication major's script, “Every Wrong Step,” won Best Alabama Short Screenplay out of over 200 submissions this year at Sidewrite, a screenwriting competition for Alabama filmmakers and a division of Birmingham’s annual Sidewalk Film Festival. ✍️🎥

Through UM's Broadcast Education Association (BEA) chapter, Copeland has been able to explore opportunities in film production, script writing and media production.

“It’s really a space for all students who are passionate,” they said. “We’re just interested in media production, whether that’s film, news, print, social media, all of it. It’s just for people to get together.”

What happens when every line becomes part of a larger story?
Comic book artist, illustrator, and educator Doug Dabbs uses dynamic mark-making to explore narrative, emotion, and the human experience. With over fourteen years of teaching visual storytelling and illustration, his work demonstrates how individual marks come together to create compelling visual worlds.
✨ “My art isn’t about perfecting each mark individually, but instead, using collective mark-making to communicate themes, emotions, and narratives.”
