Thanks to Megan Mueller & Jacob Benton at NWI Aerostructures - Nashville for hosting our Machine Tool Technology-TCAT Murfreesboro / Smyrna Campus class on a tour of the facilities. We enjoyed learning about the technology used in machining airplane wings.

*Fun Facts* Jacob Benton (TCAT Hartsville alum) told me that 50% of the NWI - Aerostructures machining department is local TCAT alums. 👏🏼

NWI Aerostructures sells between 7-9 millions pounds of machined aluminum scrap.

An aluminum billet may go on a CNC Mill weighing 4000 lbs and come off weighing a mere 120 lbs.

Thank you Sue Holland at Destaco in Mt. Juliet for having the Machine Tool Technology-TCAT Murfreesboro / Smyrna Campus class over for a visit of the facility.

We always appreciate the opportunity to take our students to on-site visits

With some reverse engineering and some 3D printing, we were able to reproduce this manual lathe gear for mere pennies compared to the manufacturer’s cost of $200.

We would’ve been down for days by the time we went thru our purchasing process and waited for the new gear to be shipped to us. But by utilizing our skills and resources, we had a new gear printed in 2.5 hours plus we will have spare gears printed for future break downs.

We may train the guys to help them become machinist, but no one had to give them any pointers about how to get their “grub on” at Farmers Restaurant in Murfreesboro after our field trips Wednesday.
