Waltham High senior Leah France received a surprise full-ride scholarship to Saint Joseph’s College of Maine after posting a TikTok highlighting her support for people with disabilities as part of the college’s challenge, which rewards students for their commitment to service.

France walked into a room filled with cheering friends, family, high school staff, Waltham Public Schools administrators and Mayor Jeannette A. McCarthy as confetti burst around her.

“I was definitely shocked when I walked in and saw everybody there for me, supporting me,” France said.

Saint Joseph’s College of Maine, located in Standish, launched the TikTok challenge to award full ride scholarships covering tuition, room and board to service-minded students. Now in its second year, the program has awarded its first scholarship of the new cycle to France, who was also the first recipient to learn of the award through a surprise celebration.
