Today, on Thursday, Alpha Omega Lambda Sorority, Inc. is launching our Domestic Violence Awareness Week campaign: Beyond the Bruise.
For the next few days, we are focusing on one important truth:
Domestic violence is not always physical.
Abuse can also look like intimidation, emotional abuse, isolation, financial control, coercion, threats, manipulation, using children, and other patterns designed to create fear, dependence, or control.
That is why awareness is important.
Some women may be experiencing domestic violence and not recognize it because they have never been hit. Others may know something feels wrong but have not had the language to name what is happening.
Over the next several days, we are going Beyond the Bruise to help identify those patterns more clearly.
And today, our Sorors and Cubs are showing up in purple in support of survivors, in remembrance of those we have lost, and in recognition of every woman whose story may not be visible from the outside. Also, Soror Thryvyn is sending love to fellow Soror Agent Smoke who is a strong DV survivor!
We begin our awareness with intimidation.
Intimidation is domestic violence.
It can look like threatening looks, angry outbursts, destroying property, punching walls, or creating an atmosphere of fear designed to control another person.
There may NEVER be a bruise.
It is STILL abuse.
