Shelton State Community College is proud to participate in the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute's (BCRI) “Historically Black” exhibit, highlighting Alabama’s HBCUs. Now open through December 12, 2026, the exhibit features selections from Shelton State’s archives, sharing the College’s rich history, from C.A. Fredd State Technical College to today’s Buccaneers. BCRI also unveiled a permanent tribute inside the Institute honoring Alabama’s 14 HBCUs and their lasting impact.

Additionally, Alabama’s 14 HBCUs have been named the 2026 recipients of BCRI’s Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award, the first time the award will recognize institutions rather than an individual. All 14 schools will be honored at BCRI’s 34th Anniversary Celebration on December 1, 2026.
