Congratulations to Dr. Paulo Araujo, an associate professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy, who won the 2026 Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award from The University of Alabama Academic Advising Association.

This is the fifth year in a row that a BCAS faculty member has won the faculty advisor award.

“Students are often full of goals and dreams,” Araujo said. “Advising them gives me the opportunity to help those goals be achieved and those dreams come true. I find that incredibly fulfilling.”

For the month of June, the University of Alabama Capacity Clinic is offering older adults free capacity evaluations, which test an individual's ability to live independently, reason through options and understand information as they age.

The clinic, which opened this year in the Department of Psychology, is an important new resource for older adults, their families and graduate students in the clinical psychology program.

Dr. Rebecca Allen's goal for the clinic is to provide services for Alabama’s aging population but also to train the next generation of geropsychologists — psychologists who specialize in older adults.

“It’s one of the things that Alabama has that is rare throughout the country," Allen said. "UA has two out of three geropsychologists in the whole state, and the third works at Tuscaloosa VA.”

The inaugural class of ICUE Fellows completed the ICUE Fellowship program last month.

The ICUE Fellowship is a yearlong program for undergraduate and graduate students in the Barefield College of Arts & Sciences who are interested or engaged in research, internships or community-based learning.

Alyssa Perrine, a rising junior majoring in neuroscience with a minor in biology and on the pre-med track, said she became an ICUE Fellow because she wanted to find opportunities outside the classroom while also connecting with students who had similar experiences and goals.

“The ICUE fellowship has helped me prepare for life after graduation by offering a wide array of professional development opportunities,” Perrine said. “Through the program, I strengthened my leadership and teamwork skills and learned new tools to support my research. I especially appreciated that the program met students where they were and used student feedback to improve the experience.”

Lilly Roehrig, a BCAS junior, was among 65 college students nationally to earn a Udall Undergraduate Scholarship, which identifies future leaders in environmental, tribal public policy and healthcare fields.

Roehrig is the second BCAS student to receive the Udall Scholarship in the past two years.

Roehrig is working on a dual degree in environmental science and English with a minor in the Honors College’s Blount Scholars Program. She is also part of the Accelerated Master’s Program for a master’s degree in environmental and natural resources.

“I am humbled to have been selected for the Udall Scholarship and thrilled to work with my fellow 2026 awardees and Udall alumni as I move forward in my career,” said Roehrig. “This honor has not only affirmed to me that I can become a leader in my field, but also that interdisciplinary work is both valuable and necessary.”

This semester the Department of Religious Studies hosted the REL Student Research Symposium, "Religion in Culture."

The event encourages student research while also giving students practice in sharing their research concisely, coherently, and to a public audience.

“We work with our students on those kinds of presentation skills leading up to this, but also for our students attending, we really want to show them what we do in this department,” said Camille Angelo, an assistant professor in the department and its events coordinator. “So this is also for them to understand what we do in the department and see if they want to get involved, whether it’s taking our classes or becoming a major or joining a research project.”

Graduate Student Highlight✨

Meet Long Ho, a graduate student pursuing a PhD in the Geological Sciences department.

"The best part of my graduate program is the wide range of research opportunities it provides," Ho said. "I have been able to travel to conferences across the United States and internationally to present my work. I also really appreciate the program’s support for personal and professional development beyond my primary field of study. Through that support, I have taken classes outside my discipline that broadened my perspective and ultimately led me to earn a concurrent MS degree in Finance."

Two Barefield College of Arts & Sciences alumni are part of the ninth cohort of Knight-Hennessy Scholars and will continue their postgraduate education at Stanford University through the fully-endowed, multidisciplinary leadership development program.

Nick Hayes and John Richardson were selected for the prestigious program designed to strengthen participants’ expertise through Stanford’s graduate programs.

Scholars also participate in the King Global Leadership Program, which includes workshops, lectures, projects and experiences that strengthen transformational leadership capabilities.

Hayes and Richardson are among 87 scholars from 31 countries who will pursue degrees in 45 graduate degree programs across all seven of Stanford’s graduate schools. UA is among only three public universities to have more than one scholar selected.

Wanyun “Abby” Shao, an associate professor in the Department of Geography & the Environment, and Hemal Dey, her postdoctoral research fellow, published one of the most comprehensive studies of flood risk in Science Advances last month.

The study determined that more than 17 million people along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts are at the highest risk of being affected by flooding by evaluating 16 different factors, adopting three machine learning models and using historical flood damage data.

“My hope is that people read this study or read about the news covering this study so that they are aware of the high risk they are confronted with, so that they will take proper and timely actions to protect themselves from the next storm, from the next hurricane. That’s my biggest hope,” Shao said.
