The horn studio of the The University of Alabama's School of Music. But the studio is not an attitude, it is the people.

The University of Alabama Horn Studio is a place where the serious horn student can learn all of the requisite skills needed for a successful career as a performer or teacher. The expectations are high and the attitude is very serious as it relates to preparation and development. The Alabama horn studio is currently made up of 20 nice, friendly, and talented individuals. The environment here is certainly competitive among the students (we have quite a few national and international award winners) but at the same time very supportive and caring. Many of the horn students find that some of their best friends come from among their studio colleagues. This has remained very consistent over the years. Therefore some of the stiffest competition that Alabama students will face anywhere they go for competitions or auditions are the same people they see in the hallway (and may have lunch with) everyday. This affords the students here the very important experience of growing and learning in a realistic environment. While a very realistic and professional approach is taken in regard to the development of the student, each student is seen and assessed very much as an individual, allowing them to develop at their own appropriate pace and level.

Kaiden is a Junior from Bay Minette, AL majoring in Music Performance. Kaiden is a member of the UA Wind Ensemble and the Million Dollar Band. Kaiden was recently named as a finalist in the Undergraduate Division of the 2026 Southeast Horn Workshop Solo Competition.

Answer: I wanted to pursue both engineering and music at the time, and Alabama has great programs for both. I fell in love with the horn studio and the campus.

Answer: I loved Skip’s teaching style in lessons, and I absolutely fell in love with the music program through hearing different ensembles in concert. I loved the campus and the amazing opportunities presented to me at UA, while also still being able to stay in state and close to home!

Many congratulations are in order!

Congratulations to the University of Alabama Horn Studio on a fantastic trip to the 2018 Southeast Horn Workshop! The Workshop was hosted by the University of Georgia and the UA Horn studio presented themselves and the University well.

Congratulations to the UA Horn Choir on their performance!

Congratulations to to Skip Snead on a very effective performance of a new composition by Amir Zaheri.

Congratulations to Josh Williams on an extremely successful recital. It was a truly wonderful “first public outing”.

Congratulations to Haley Funkhouser for receiving Runner Up in the Orchestral High Horn Competition.

Congratulations to Matt Meadows for winning the College Solo Competition, to Tony Padilla for winning the Orchestral Low Horn Competition, and to their quartet (with Charlie Snead and Anthony Parrish) for winning the quartet competition. Congratulations to these winners for getting to perform in the Richard Deane master class as well!

Congratulations to the other two quartets that traveled to competition on great performances as well!

The University of Alabama was truly represented well this weekend. Thank you to UGA for hosting!

Some of our horn choir members from tonight’s performance of “B-Horn to be Wild”. This horn choir is going great places. Wow.
