Applications open: UWC–VUB Joint PhD Scholarship (2027)

The University of the Western Cape (UWC), in partnership with Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), invites applications for the Caroline Pauwels–Jakes Gerwel Joint PhD Scholarship.

The project, “Towards a Compassionate University: Co-creating Supportive University Structures and Cultures for Serious Illness, Death, Bereavement and Caregiving”, will explore how university structures and cultures respond to these experiences and work with students, staff and institutional stakeholders to co-create a contextually appropriate Compassionate University framework.

This opportunity offers:
• Joint doctoral registration at UWC and VUB.
• Supervision by a multidisciplinary team across both institutions.
• Research and training stays in Belgium.

Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents, hold a completed Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, such as Psychology, Social Work or Public Health, with a final average above 70%, and demonstrate competence in both qualitative and quantitative research.

Youth Day 2026 🇿🇦

Today, we honour the courage of the young people of 1976 whose voices helped shape a more just and democratic South Africa. Their legacy reminds us that youth are not only the leaders of tomorrow—they are the changemakers of today.

As we commemorate Youth Day, may we continue to learn, question, innovate, and act with purpose. The path they walked opened doors for future generations; it is now our responsibility to use education, compassion, and collective action to build a better society for all.

The courage of 1976 lives on in every young person who dares to dream, speak out, and create change.

At the Department of Psychology, we celebrate the importance of empathy, understanding, and support for all. Let us continue to create spaces where mental wellbeing is prioritised, conversations about mental health are normalised, and every person feels seen, heard and valued.

💭 Take a moment today to check in—with yourself and with someone else.
