Over 100 years ago, the Faculty of Health Sciences opened the doors of its campus on the slopes of Devil's Peak in Cape Town. INVITATION: The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) invites you to the next inaugural lecture in the University of Cape Town Inaugural Lecture series.

Professor Mushi Matjila will deliver his inaugural lecture titled "Navigating growth through the support of others: From Kiss-ing in the Placental Bed, through to Research Policy and Placenta Mediated Disorders​" on Thursday, 17 September 2026, at 17:30 SAST at the New Learning Centre Lecture Theatre, Anatomy Building, Faculty of Health Sciences.

As we wrap up Women's Month, today we celebrate Erin Lombard, Head of Women’s Health at SHAWCO Health (UCT), who is young and already making a meaningful impact on women’s healthcare, long before qualifying as a doctor.

Now in her fifth year of the MBChB programme, Erin leads initiatives that bring preventive healthcare to women who too often face barriers to accessing essential services.

Through SHAWCO Health’s volunteer-led clinics in Hout Bay, Tambo and through its partnership with Scalabrini, she helps coordinate cervical cancer screening, follow-up care, health promotion initiatives, and volunteer support.

One of her proudest achievements has been expanding access to Pap smear screening while introducing more evidence-based approaches to cervical cancer prevention across SHAWCO’s clinics. But for Erin, healthcare extends beyond treating illness. It is also about advocacy, leadership and building systems that create lasting change.

This Women’s Month, we celebrate Erin and the many young women in health sciences who are already creating change in their communities.

In commemoration of Women’s Month, today we spotlight a woman who leads with purpose, on the field, in healthcare and beyond.

Dr Insaaf Levy (MBChB Class of 2025) is the first qualified medical doctor to represent the senior Springbok Women rugby team.

In May 2026, she represented South Africa at the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup in Nairobi, Kenya, where the Springbok Women secured their fifth consecutive title, defeating hosts Kenya 35–20 in the final.

Dr Levy’s journey is a powerful reminder that women can pursue excellence across disciplines, break boundaries and bring their unique strengths into every space they occupy.
