This was more than a celebration — it was a homecoming!
Congratulations on the 70th Anniversary of the School of Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (EBIT) at the University of Pretoria!
A joyous evening filled with excellent music and beautiful artistic dancers, but most of all, filled with people. People who gave, who built, who believed.
We honoured the legends and patriots who paved the way — the pioneers who laid the foundation. We remembered those who carried the torch through the decades, and we uplift those who are active in it now — the lecturers, students, alumni, and role-players who are still building, still serving, still dreaming.

Because this faculty was never just built with bricks and concrete. It was built with people. With heart.
70 years of lives changed. 70 years of futures built.

And as Prof Wynand JvdM Steyn, the Dean of the EBIT Faculty, stated:
"The challenges of the next decade will require us to act with unprecedented urgency and vision. We cannot wait for tomorrow's solutions. For seven decades, we have not just predicted the future. We have built it."

Here's to the legends behind us, the builders beside us, and the future before us!

Designing for Local Impact, the fourth edition of the National Student Timber Design Competition has launched.

Students are invited to develop an architectural or structural proposal in which timber is used as the primary construction material, with a clear response to a South African social, environmental, spatial or cultural context. The competition is open to students in architecture, engineering and related built environment disciplines at South African higher education institutions, with individual and team entries accepted.

South Africa’s construction industry could reduce waste and its environmental impact by turning building rubble and other waste streams into innovative building materials, says University of Pretoria structural engineer Prof Elsabe Kearsley.

Her research focuses on developing lightweight, strong and durable concrete aggregates from materials such as building rubble, fly ash, steel slag and clay mine waste, with potential applications in transforming old and dilapidated buildings into new living and working spaces.
