MINE SAFETY OFFICER COMSOC 1 AND 2

The COMSOC 1 (Chamber of Mines Safety Officer Course 1) is a foundational skills program (NQF Level 4) designed for mine overseers, safety officers, shift bosses, or line managers. It equips them with knowledge and skills to implement a mineโ€™s safety program, focusing on identifying and managing health and safety threats, understanding the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA), incident reporting, and safety inspections.

The COMSOC 2 is an advanced course (NQF Level 5, typically 10 days) building on COMSOC 1. It deepens knowledge of safety management, covering principles of safety management, security philosophy, risk management, occupational health, ergonomics, standards, procedures, accident investigation, planned inspections, emergency preparedness, and explosives safety. It prepares candidates for chief safety officer duties and further compliance with the MHSA.

Riggers are involved with the lifting and moving of heavy machinery and equipment by using cranes and other special equipment. Before a load is handled, Riggers calculate the weight of the object, and the ability of the rigging equipment to perform the work in a safe manner. Riggers may work in a workshop, underground in a mine, on ground level or hundreds of meters up in the air when putting up or taking down different kinds of structures.
