DAY 1 | MAIN CONFERENCE | ACADEMIC KEYNOTE |

We were honoured to welcome Prof Nerissa C. Brown as our Academic Keynote Speaker at the 15th African Accounting and Finance Association Conference 2026.

Her keynote, “Accounting Research for a Changing World: Where Context Creates Research Advantage,” challenged scholars to rethink how we approach research and, importantly, to recognise the value of the environments we know best.

“Your local context is your research advantage.”

A powerful reminder that the questions rooted in our own communities can become the foundation for research that is not only globally relevant, but deeply meaningful and impactful.

Prof Brown was later joined by Prof John Dumay for an engaging Meet the Editors session, creating an opportunity for scholars to gain valuable insights into academic publishing, research and navigating the journey from research idea to publication.

A day of thought-provoking conversations, knowledge exchange and meaningful engagement as AAFA 2026 continues to bring African scholarship to the global stage.

From numbers to impact.

We were honoured to hear from our Industry Keynote Speaker, Dr Thamsanqa Zikode, Head of Audit (Acting) at the Auditor-General South Africa (AGSA), who delivered a powerful address titled:

“From Numbers to Impact: Reimagining Accounting and Finance for an Innovative, Accountable and Inclusive Africa.”

One question from his address stood out:

“How can we capture value that cannot be captured by numbers?”

A powerful reminder that accounting and finance are not only about what we measure, but also about the impact we create.

As continues, we are reimagining what accounting and finance can contribute to a more innovative, accountable and inclusive Africa.

15th African Accounting and Finance Association Conference 2026 | MAIN CONFERENCE

And just like that, the Main Conference is officially underway!

We opened Day One with a powerful call to action from Prof Tankiso Moloi, who highlighted the importance of coming together as academics, industry partners and African scholars to move beyond conversation and towards actionable solutions that create meaningful impact across the continent.
Vice Dean Prof Eita Hinaunye guided us through the programme, setting the stage for a day filled with insightful conversations, knowledge sharing and meaningful engagement.
We were then officially welcomed and the conference opened by Prof Yinka Moses, President of the African Accounting and Finance Association.

From research to practice, from local contexts to global questions, Day One is already setting the tone for an impactful conference.
This is where great research meets great minds.

Congratulations to Samukelisiwe Hlatshwayo and Prof. Riyad Moosa, Associate Professor in the Department of Accountancy, on the publication of their research article in the International Journal of Business Ecosystem and Strategy (IJBES).

“Governance ecosystems and statutory disclosure compliance: Financial misconduct reporting in South African state-owned entities under the PFMA.”

The study explores how South African state-owned entities (SOEs) disclose compliance with the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) reporting requirements, particularly in relation to financial misconduct.

The findings reveal persistent gaps in transparency and accountability, highlighting the need for stronger governance frameworks and more meaningful disclosures within the public sector.

Research such as this contributes to important conversations around good governance, accountability, transparency, and responsible public-sector management while highlighting opportunities to strengthen institutional practices in South Africa.

Today, we proudly celebrate our Research Associate, Dr Sylvia A. Siphugu, on her nomination for the Woman of Stature Awards South Africa 2027 in the Gauteng region, in the Oil and Energy category.

Dr Sylvia A. Siphugu is an Energy Entrepreneur and Infrastructure Leader committed to advancing sustainable energy solutions, digital transformation, and inclusive infrastructure development that empowers rural communities and creates lasting social impact.

Her nomination is a wonderful recognition of her leadership, vision, and contribution to meaningful change.
