The Zambia Institute for Tourism and Hospitality Studies (ZITHS) proudly hosted the recent Trainer of Trainers Orientation Program in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO) through the Skills Development for Increased Employability Programme (SDEP).

The program brought together enterprise trainers and industry mastercrafts persons, reflecting the dual nature of apprenticeship delivery in Zambia’s tourism sector. Over several days, participants were immersed in modern competence‑based methodologies, innovative assessment tools, and mentorship strategies designed to strengthen the bridge between classroom learning and workplace practice. Trainers sharpened their facilitation skills, while mastercrafts persons refined their coaching approaches — ensuring apprentices are prepared not only academically but also for the realities of the industry. The sessions were facilitated by experts from ZITHS, TEVETA, and the Tourism Industry, ensuring a rich blend of academic rigor and practical workplace experience

Mrs. Anne Kaoma‑Sibanda, Executive Director of ZITHS, welcomed participants and underscored the program as a strategic investment in Zambia’s future workforce. Mr. Paul Mupinde, speaking on behalf of the Tourism Sector Skills Body Chairperson, Tourism Council of Zambia (TCZ), emphasized the importance of aligning curricula with labour‑market needs and extending the National Apprenticeship Programme beyond hospitality into the wider tourism ecosystem. Mr. Todini Marecha, ILO Chief Technical Officer, commended the progress achieved so far, reminding all that this initiative is for the people of Zambia who must harness the apprenticeship program. He reaffirmed ILO’s commitment to supporting the effort through the SDEP project.

By the close of the orientation, participants had developed action plans to integrate competence‑based training and assessment into their institutions and enterprises. The program reinforced collaboration among educators, industry, and regulators, laying a strong foundation for a globally competitive, resilient workforce ready to serve Zambia’s growing tourism sector.
