Before Robert Menzies College had a single resident, a small group of people had a vision for a Christian residential college where students would be cared for and supported.
We recently unveiled portraits of three of those founders: Professor Lawrence and Alison Lyons, and Professor Edwin Judge.
Professor Lawrence Lyons was known as the “engine driver” of the New University Colleges Council (NUCC), the group that brought RMC into being. He steered NUCC towards building colleges rather than halls of residence. As Honorary Secretary, he negotiated the site where New College now stands.
Alison was a founding member in her own right, and her convictions helped shape the Christian mission of its colleges.
Edwin served on the NUCC Board from 1960 to 1972. His vision of “Athens and Jerusalem” has been instrumental in shaping RMC as a place of personal, academic and spiritual formation. He also helped suggest the College motto, Vera Cogitate, meaning “think true”.
We were honoured to have Edwin himself with us for the unveiling, along with his daughter, Victoria. While he was here, he took a look around campus, including B Block, which is named after him. đź’™
Their portraits now hang in the Dining Hall , a reminder to every resident of the people who built this community.
