Today we kicked off O-Week with a beautiful Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony at UNSW Sydney.

Thank you to Aunty Barb Simms (proud Bidjigal, Gweagal, and Wadi Wadi women) for the Welcome to Country, Richard Chan-Hampton for leading the Smoking Ceremony, and The Wambuul Dancers for an incredible performance.

We were also honoured to hear from Deputy Vice-Chancellor Indigenous Leanne Holt and Professor Merlin Crossley, and Nura Gili student ambassador Jayden Kennedy.

A morning filled with culture, community and connection — wishing all new and returning students an amazing Term 2.

Congratulations to UNSW Law & Justice student Amos Taylor on being awarded the Australian Academy of Law’s First Nations Scholarship for 2026.

A descendant of the Gija and Jaru peoples of the Eastern Kimberley, Amos is researching the governance of air and space through an Indigenous lens - exploring the protection of what he calls “sky Country”.

His work focuses on how First Nations law and knowledge systems can help shape future legal frameworks for air and space governance, ensuring these spaces are approached with respect, responsibility and custodianship.

Amos’s research is a powerful example of Indigenous knowledge driving new conversations and future-focused thinking within the legal profession.

We’re proud to see Amos recognised for his leadership, innovation and commitment to protecting Country — including sky Country.

Last Friday, we held the second annual UNSW Indigenous Graduates Celebration at Foundation Hall (The Museum of Contemporary Art) 🎓

The night was in celebration of the achievements and importance of our new Indigenous graduates, marking this milestone with their families, friends and community.

Our guests were congratulated by Professor Attila Brungs (VC) and Professor Leanne Holt (DVC-I), and received gifts from businesses that give back to Blak artists and communities.

We rounded-out the night with dinner, drinks and dancing on the steps of Sydney Harbour 💃🏾

A big thank-you to Uncle Ray Davidson for his warm Welcome to Country and Linda Kennedy for being our incredible MC ♥️
