The US midterms and the state of democracy worldwide

As part of Democracy Week 2026, the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy brought together experts from different backgrounds and across the political spectrum to examine what these elections reveal about the state of American democracy.

The conversation touched on economic anxieties, shifting electoral coalitions, declining trust in institutions, and the willingness of losing candidates to accept results. It also addressed a broader question: which of these challenges are specific to the United States, and which reflect pressures facing democracies everywhere?

West Africa is navigating some of its most complex security and political challenges in decades. What role can regional institutions play in that context?

On 13 October, the Geneva Graduate Institute welcomed H.E. Julius Maada Bio, President of Sierra Leone and Immediate Past Chairman of ECOWAS, for a keynote lecture as part of the Director’s Global Leadership for Peace Series.

Drawing on his experience at both national and regional levels, President Bio reflected on ECOWAS’ response to political and security crises, its engagement with Sahel states, and its efforts to strengthen democratic governance and development across the region.

Carlo Ginzburg, one of the greatest historians of the twentieth century and a founding figure of microhistory, passed away this year.

Tomorrow (8 October), the Geneva Graduate Institute honours his memory on the occasion of the posthumous conferral of the Prix Nessim Habif.

The discussion will bring together historians and literary scholars to reflect on a body of work that fundamentally renewed historical practice.
