On Thursday, 22nd of October, we’re taking foreign policy out of the seminar room and into the streets of St. Gallen.

We’ll walk and talk about the topics that shape Switzerland’s place in the world: migration, global health, tech, finance, law and more. Each stop brings a new conversation.

Bring your opinions, your questions and comfy shoes. No expertise needed!

«Die EU und die Schweiz stellen im Bereich der Zuwanderung mit der Personenfreizügigkeit Ausnahmen dar» – so Lukas Reimann an unserer Podiumsdiskussion zur Volksinitiative Keine 10-Millionen-Schweiz

Die Initiative will die Zuwanderung – insbesondere im Asylwesen und beim Familiennachzug – begrenzen, um die Schweizer Bevölkerung vor 2050 unter der 10-Millionen-Marke zu halten.

Diskutiert wurden Fragen rund um Wohlstandsentwicklung, das Verhältnis zur EU sowie die Beweggründe und Narrative des Initiativkomitees. Barbara Gysi äusserte Bedenken zum Arbeitskräftemangel und zur Argumentation der Initianten. Politikexperte Michael Herrmann schätzte ein, dass das Bild einer 10-Millionen-Schweiz mehr Ängste schüre als die konkrete Realität es rechtfertige.

Am 14. Juni werden wir sehen, wie sich die Stimmbevölkerung entscheidet. Wie Fabio Amstad es treffend zusammenfasste: Am Ende geht es darum, Mehrheiten zu finden und Kompromisse zu suchen.

Our panel on drug policy in Latin America explored how drug control operates not only as policy, but also as narrative. A narrative that shapes legitimacy, defines enemies, justifies violence, and reflects deeper geopolitical and economic interests.

What became particularly clear is that illegal drug economies cannot be understood in isolation. They are embedded in legal structures, tied to broader market dynamics, and often sustained by structural inequalities, weak infrastructure, and limited economic alternatives. The discussion challenged simplified security centered approaches and asked what lies behind prohibitionist frameworks, what interests they protect, and why they so often fail to reduce violence.

Thank you to Prof. Dr. Thomas Grisaffi and Prof. Matías Dewey for this rich and engaging discussion, and to everyone who joined us.
