Our panel on drug policy in Latin America explored how drug control operates not only as policy, but also as narrative. A narrative that shapes legitimacy, defines enemies, justifies violence, and reflects deeper geopolitical and economic interests.

What became particularly clear is that illegal drug economies cannot be understood in isolation. They are embedded in legal structures, tied to broader market dynamics, and often sustained by structural inequalities, weak infrastructure, and limited economic alternatives. The discussion challenged simplified security centered approaches and asked what lies behind prohibitionist frameworks, what interests they protect, and why they so often fail to reduce violence.

Thank you to Prof. Dr. Thomas Grisaffi and Prof. Matías Dewey for this rich and engaging discussion, and to everyone who joined us.

“The U.S. democracy is under assault, but until now the system is largely resisting.”

A big thank you to Prof. Suzanne Enzerink for joining us at our recent foraus St. Gallen “Ask your Professor” event and sharing her insights on the current state of U.S. politics and democracy.

What began as a conversation on security, migration, and protest also raised broader questions about democratic resilience, polarized media, the role of the Supreme Court, and the international consequences of U.S. politics, including the ongoing war involving Iran and the divisions it reveals within the U.S. and beyond.

On political polarization, Prof. Enzerink noted that the current U.S. media environment is so divided that “different sides cannot even get to a factual agreement anymore,” with echo chambers posing a serious threat to public discourse.

She also pointed to how migration debates have absorbed far-right narratives, further deepening polarization, and stressed the importance of paying closer attention to changes to voting rights, attacks on academic institutions, and the international consequences of the U.S. withdrawal from global agreements.

At the same time, the discussion also opened space for reflection: the current moment may be exposing the limits of the two-party system and forcing a broader reevaluation of political alternatives in the United States.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this thoughtful exchange!

We had the pleasure of hosting a panel on “The Allure of Authoritarianism: The Influence of the US on European Politics” together with Amnesty International at the HSG.

Together with Simon Rochat, Christoph Frei, Thomas Burri and Suzanne Enzernik, and moderated by Tristan Löw, we explored why strong leaders are gaining appeal again, how political narratives travel across the Atlantic, and what this means for democratic resilience in Europe.

It was an engaging discussion, and it was great to hear such a variety of perspectives.

A big thank you to all speakers and participants for the engaging and thoughtful discussion!
