🌿 Bringing environmental research closer to the community

On Saturday, 26 September, the Environmental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory - Isle of Excellence - UCY joined the 1st Climate Adaptation Festival, “The Mediterranean We Desire”, at Europe Square in Larnaca, organised within the framework of .

At our stand, we welcomed visitors of all ages to explore our research activities and learn about the projects we contribute to: , Project, EU Project, -CLIM, EU Project and .

For our younger visitors, science became a hands-on experience. Using scientific instruments, children measured temperature, wind and air pollutants, discovering how researchers observe and study the environment around us.

Our thermal camera activity began with a simple challenge: can you guess the temperature of the surfaces around you? Children compared their predictions with measurements of different urban materials and surfaces. These observations opened up conversations about heat in our cities, the importance of the materials we use, and the role of nature-based solutions in creating more comfortable urban spaces.

Alongside these activities, we discussed the need for clean energy and the ways research can support climate adaptation, connecting the work of our laboratory with questions that matter in everyday life.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to take part, ask questions and share ideas, and to the organisers for bringing research and the community together!

We are delighted to share that Giorgos Alexandrou, researcher at the Environmental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory - Isle of Excellence - UCY, received the Tromp Foundation Travel Award to Young Scientists at the European Meteorological Society Annual Meeting 2026 ( ) in Utrecht.

The award supported his participation in Session OSA2.4 – Human Biometeorology, where he presented our work on the cooling effects of urban trees and their role in reducing pedestrian heat stress in dense Mediterranean environments.

The research presented at EMS builds on our recently published paper:
📄 “Urban tree cooling and thermal stress mitigation in a dry Mediterranean climate: Coupled CFD–SOLWEIG modelling with UTCI assessment”

The study, published in Urban Forestry & Urban Greening, combines CFD simulations, SOLWEIG and the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) to investigate how urban trees influence microclimate and pedestrian thermal stress in the historic centre of Nicosia.

The work was carried out by Giorgos Alexandrou, Nestoras Antoniou, Petros Mouzourides and Marina Neophytou.

Sand and dust storms are particularly relevant to Cyprus, affecting the air we breathe and potentially our health.

Through the CIROCCO project, our team at EFM-Lab is working to strengthen air-quality monitoring in Cyprus. This short WMO animation explains how dust storms form, how they travel over long distances, and why reliable observations and early warnings matter.

Definitely worth watching!

Sand and dust storms can have serious health impacts, including respiratory problems. But how do they form and how do they travel? Watch this. Through a global initiative, WMO brings together countries and scientific centres to improve observations, advance dust forecasting, and provide operational....

The latest Eurostat estimate for 2025 sends an important warning message for Cyprus’ climate targets.

While the EU economy grew by 17.5% during 2015–2025, total greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 17.2%. In contrast, Cyprus was among the few EU Member States where emissions increased, recording a rise of 10.7% over the same period.

This highlights a critical issue: economic growth alone is not enough. Progress must be aligned with climate action, sustainable development, and the national and European targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In our new blog post, we discuss what these figures mean for Cyprus, why the current trajectory raises concerns, and why stronger, evidence-based policies are needed to accelerate the transition towards a climate-neutral economy.

Το έργο AgriProAct (AI-based Agro-Meteorological Decision Support System) ξεκινά τη δραστηριότητά του στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος «AI in Government» του Ίδρυμα Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας/ Research and Innovation Foundation, με συνολική διάρκεια 24 μηνών.

Innovation Ltd, Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου | University Of Cyprus, Centre of Excellence και A.I. Ltd.
