Beckett and Cyprus (First Part of the Mediterranean Beckett Studies Roundtable series)

Date: 5th December 2026

Time: 16:00-17:30 Eastern European Time (EET)

Dr Swati Joshi with Holly Kunst from Nicosia’s Centre of Visual Arts and Research (CVAR) welcome you all to the ‘Beckett and Cyprus’ online roundtable, the first part of the Mediterranean Beckett Studies Roundtable series. This first online roundtable discussion is in conversation with ongoing Beckett Studies academic endeavours like the recent Journal of Beckett Studies and Samuel Beckett Today/Aujourd'hui special issues; the Radio France podcast series ‘Avoir Raison avec Samuel Beckett’ (2026); the 2026 Los Angeles event, ‘Beckett’s Thing: A Writer’s Engagement with the Visual Arts;’ and the MLA 2027 Los Angeles Beckett Studies panels. Woven within this rich academic tapestry, the ‘Beckett and Cyprus’ roundtable aims to focus on the following three themes: (1) First is the significance of Beckett’s works with Cyprus’s cultural and geopolitical context, (2) second is the legacy of Beckett productions in Cyprus, and (3) third is the wider Beckett Studies academic discourse in Cyprus. The panel presentations will be followed by a discussion with the audience.

The abstract for the talk is provided below:

Tracking the language comprehension abilities of Large Language Models across languages

This talk will discuss the ability of Large Language Models (LLMs) to process language. Building on the metaphor that construes models as bags of words that approximate human linguistic cognition, I will present the results of two tasks that involve lexical decoding and grammatical comprehension respectively, comparing humans and LLMs on the same benchmarks. While the tested models are successfully approximating human baselines, certain qualitative and quantitative differences reliably distinguish the two types of agents. Strikingly, English is not found to be the best-performing language for LLMs, as it is systematically outperformed by several Romance languages, even smaller ones. This result invites a cross-linguistically informed investigation of the abilities and limitations of LLMs, taking into account the role of several predictors such as language distance from big Indo-European languages, type of writing system, and size of linguistic community and digital resources.

The UCY Irish Studies Collective of the Department of English Studies, UCY in collaboration with the Embassy of Ireland, Cyprus, warmly invite you to Digging into Languages: Seamus Heaney in Cypriot Greek Translation a reading featuring new translations of Heaney’s poetry by UCY alumna Thea Paraskeva.

Translation was at the heart of Seamus Heaney’s poetry, from reflections on how the name of his childhood family farm, Mossbawn, contains different linguistic histories (in ‘Belderg’, 1974) to the many translations he carried out over his six-decade writing career, such as Sweeney Astray: A Version from the Irish (1983) or The Burial at Thebes: A Version of Sophocles' Antigone (2004).

Digging into Languages celebrates Heaney’s work by making it sing in Cypriot Greek, featuring new translations by Thea Paraskeva. Inspired by her focus on Heaney’s farming poetry from Death of a Naturalist (1966), we will hear music from Cypriot and Irish traditions, before the event concludes with a discussion on the making of Thea’s translations with Dr Spyros Armostis, Dr Vasso Giannakopoulou and Dr James Little.

Entrance free of charge
