The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is one of the foremost social science universities in the world. LSE was founded in 1895 and has grown to become one of the foremost social science universities in the world, ranked alongside Harvard, UC Berkeley and Stanford. A specialist university with an international intake, LSE's reach extends from its central London campus to around the world. The School has a cosmopolitan student body, with around 10,800 full time students from 160 countries. It has a staff of just over 3,300, with about 46 per cent drawn from countries outside the UK.

Richard Titmuss arrived at LSE in 1950 as the School’s first Chair of Social Administration.

Titmuss refocused LSE’s social policy provision towards engagement with what he termed the ‘welfare state’ and his efforts boosted the School’s reputation for academic social policy.

His years of public engagement made him Britain’s leading authority on social policy and earned him a CBE in 1966.

👏 Congratulations to LSE Honorary Doctor Navi Pillay on winning the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law!

Born into a family of Indian Tamil origin under apartheid in Durban, South Africa, Navi Pillay dedicated her career to confronting deep structural discrimination, segregation and exclusion. The Norwegian Nobel Committee highlighted her commitment to universal legal principles and her firm moral compass.

⚖️ She was the first woman to start a law practice in her home province of Natal in 1967. Over the next few years she acted as a defence attorney for anti-apartheid activists, exposing torture, and helping establish key rights for prisoners on Robben Island, including Nelson Mandela.

Throughout a long career during which she has significantly enlarged the scope and impact of international law, Navi Pillay has served as a judge on the High Court in South Africa, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court.

She was the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and, until recently, she chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Pillay is currently a judge on the International Court of Justice in the case where Myanmar stands accused of genocide.
