Feel the thrill at Happy Valley Racecourse! 🐎🏇

The horse racing season is back, kicking off Wednesday 9 September! Every race night, Happy Valley lights up with roaring crowds, pumping energy and plenty of midweek chaos. 🔥🍻

And trust us — you don’t need to know anything about horse racing to have a great night. This is as much about the atmosphere as the races: floodlights, cheering crowds, drinks, live action and even a McDonald’s inside the racecourse for when those late-night cravings hit. 🍔🍟

Get your crowd togher, pick a horse, place a cheeky bet and see if tonight’s your lucky night. 🤑🐎

💬 Tip: Old news is so exciting, head over to Wan Chai afterwards and keep the party going with “Wan Chai Wednesday.”

⏰ Race times: First race around 7PM & Last race around 11PM (8 races in total)
📅 Season: September–July
💰 Tickets: FREE if you show a foreign passport, otherwise its just HKD10
📍 Location: Happy Valley Racecourse, Hong Kong Island
🗺️ How to get there: Take the tram to Happy Valley, or MTR to Causeway Bay Exit A and follow the crowds.

Your Midweek Plans Just Got A Lot Funnier! 😂

Forget another night of mid-week Netflix — Hong Kong’s comedy scene is where you want to be! These are FREE English-language open mic comedy nights, meaning pretty much anyone can jump on stage and give stand-up a go. Think first-timers, aspiring comedians and more established comedians testing out brand-new material.

The jokes that survive the open mic often make their way into their bigger paid weekend shows, so you might catch the next great bit before everyone else! Each show lasts around 1.5–2 hours, with multiple comedians taking the stage — many doing short sets, so there’s always someone new to watch and plenty of chances for a good laugh! 😂🎤

MONDAY 8PM — Bar 109, Wan Chai Bar 109 - 109 Lockhart Road, Wanchai, Hong Kong
Kick off the week with free comedy at Bar 109 and enjoy their all-night Happy Hour while you watch the comedians take the stage.

TUESDAY 8:30 PM — The Aftermath, Central The Aftermath Bar
Head to The Aftermath for another night of free comedy making Tuesday a little less boring. Pre-register online through commedy.hk.

WEDNESDAY 8PM — Not Too Sweet, Central Not 2 Sweet
There’s often free comedy and Happy Hour on Wednesdays too, so check the Comedy.HK programme before heading.

WEEKEND COMEDY
Want more than a free midweek laugh? Comedy.HK also lists paid comedy shows throughout the weekend, including showcases, professional stand-up, improv and other comedy events. Check the calendar to see what’s coming up.

💬 Tip: The programme changes, so check https://comedy.hk/ before heading out.

💰 Comedy: Free on selected nights!
📍 Mon: Bar 109, Wan Chai
📍 Tue: The Aftermath, Central
📍 Wed: Not Too Sweet, Central

👻 Hungry Ghost Festival Is Tomorrow! 🇭🇰🔥

Ever wondered why you see food offerings, incense, burning joss paper and Chinese opera around Hong Kong in August?

Tomorrow, 27 August, is the Hungry Ghost Festival — the peak of Ghost Month. 👻🌙

According to traditional beliefs, the gates of the spirit world open during the 7th lunar month, allowing wandering spirits to return to the world of the living. Families honour their ancestors with food, incense and paper offerings, while offerings are also made for spirits with no one to remember them. 🙏

In Hong Kong, the festival is closely linked to the Yu Lan Festival, particularly among the Chiu Chow community. It’s less about being scared of ghosts and more about respecting ancestors, spirits and doing good deeds. ❤️

👻 Things you’re traditionally told NOT to do:

🌊 Don’t swim at night — spirits who drowned are believed to linger in the water.

🍜 Don’t touch offerings — they’re gifts for spirits. If you knock something over, apologise!

💰 Don’t pick up money from the street — it could be an offering or a traditional “bribe” for the underworld.

🚌 Don’t take the last MTR or bus — wandering spirits are believed to take the empty seats.

📸 Don’t take photos at night — you might accidentally capture or disturb a spirit! 👀

🥢 Don’t stand chopsticks upright in your bowl — it resembles incense and is believed to invite spirits.

🎭 Don’t sit in the front row at Chinese opera — these seats are traditionally reserved for visiting spirits.

💍 Avoid major life events — weddings, moving house or starting a business are traditionally considered unlucky during Ghost Month.

💬 Tip: These are traditional superstitions, not rules to be afraid of — but definitely worth knowing if you’re exploring Hong Kong during Ghost Month! 👻

📅 Hungry Ghost Festival: 27 August 2026
👻 Ghost Month: 13 August – 10 September 2026
