Faculty of Science, The University of Hong Kong The Faculty now comprises six departments and school: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics & Actuarial Science.

The Faculty of Science, The University of Hong Kong was formally established in 1939, though basic science subjects were taught as early as 1912 when the University first admitted students. As a leading research and teaching university, our teachers pursue research at the forefront of science and have a good track record in performing competitively internationally. While our academic staff members are world class researchers, they are also dedicated teachers committed to providing our students with the best learning experience. Recognizing knowledge exchange (KE) as a third pillar that is equally important as teaching and research, we endeavor to promote science literacy in the community through this social media platform. We regard KE as engaging, for mutual benefit, with the public to make accessible the knowledge needed to enhance human and environmental well-being. Public and prospective students can also find information about our five undergraduate degree programmes in this page, including 6901 Bachelor of Science, 6688 Science Master Class (Bachelor of Science & Master of Research), 6729 Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science, 6224 Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Applied Artificial Intelligence, 6858 Bachelor Science & Bachelor of Laws (5-year double degree jointly offered with the Faculty of Law), and 6119 Bachelor of Education & Bachelor of Science (5-year double degree jointly offered with the Faculty of Education).

[Research Stories: Wave Simulations to Open a New Window on Dark Matter] (中文版本見文末) Dark matter may be made of extremely light particles that behave like waves.
As light passes a galaxy, gravity bends it and can create multiple images. If dark matter has a wave-like nature, it may leave traces in these images.
HKU Physics and HKIAA researchers, in collaboration with BNU, used computer simulations to test this idea. Their results matched observations more closely than other models, offering a new way to study dark matter.

暗物質可能由極輕的粒子組成,並呈現像波一樣的特性。當光線經過星系時,引力會令光線彎曲,甚至形成多個影像。如果暗物質具有波的特性,便可能在這些影像中留下痕跡。
港大物理學系及香港天文及天體物理研究所與北京師範大學的研究團隊利用電腦模擬測試這個可能性。結果比其他模型更接近實際觀測,為研究暗物質提供了新的方法。

HKU researchers highlight how rising ocean temperatures can disrupt seafood supplies, intensify extreme weather, threaten coastal livelihoods and affect mental wellbeing. The team calls for marine heatwaves to be recognised as a public health issue.
海洋熱浪不只傷害海洋,也可能影響人類健康。港大研究指出,海水升溫可影響海產供應、加劇極端天氣、威脅沿海社群生計及心理健康。研究團隊促請將海洋熱浪視為公共衞生議題。
