🚀 Next stop: Mars! Aerospace technology took center stage at the recent InnoCarnival, where RTHK's Hong Kong United caught up with The University of Hong Kong Earth and Planetary Sciences team!

At InnoCarnival, the team led by Prof. Yiliang Li shared their excitement about a monumental milestone: being selected to join China's historic Tianwen-3 Mars sample return mission, launching in 2028! 🔴✨

At the carnival, the team showcased their research and the development of the "Short-Wavelength Infrared Spectrometer." This advanced instrument will undertake three vital tasks on Mars:
🌪️ Monitoring dust storms to ensure a safe landing.
🗺️ Mapping high-resolution mineral distributions for landing site selection.
💧 Searching for signs of ancient life and hydrated minerals from orbit for over 5 years.

【Media Coverage】As we age, daily mobility often becomes more strenuous. If a lightweight pair of "smart sports pants" could provide extra power to every step, it would significantly improve the quality of life for the elderly! 🚶‍♂️✨

Recently featured in Ming Pao and am730, The University of Hong Kong deep-tech startup Exynergy, led by Prof. Xi Ning from the Faculty of Engineering, has developed a revolutionary soft wearable robot. Supported by the HKSAR Government’s RAISe+ Scheme, this "artificial muscle" exoskeleton is changing the game for elderly care and rehabilitation! 🦾

Unlike traditional bulky exoskeletons, Exynergy’s system weighs only 2kg. It uses Shear Thickening Gel (STG) to mimic human muscles and combines neural signal analysis to predict movements before muscles contract! 🧠⚡

With over 1,000 volunteers having tested the prototypes, the team is now redesigning the system into easy-to-wear fashion, aiming for small-scale mass production next year.

近日 AM730 及《明報》報道了由香港大學 (HKU) 工程學院席寧教授帶領的深科技初創企業類生科技 (Exynergy)。團隊成功研發出以「人工肌肉」驅動的輕量化軟性外骨骼，並已獲政府「產學研1+計劃」資助，為銀髮族及復康人士帶來全新希望！🦾

有別於傳統笨重的穿戴式機械人，Exynergy 系統僅重約2公斤。它採用「剪切增稠凝膠 (STG)」模擬肌肉，並結合 AI 分析神經訊號，在肌肉發力前「預判」動作，提供更即時、更自然的輔助！🧠⚡

經過逾千名志願者反覆測試，團隊目前正將這套系統改良成方便穿脫的「緊身運動褲」形態，並預計於明年進行小批量生產。

【TV Interview】"Be happy!" Have you ever encouraged a friend in distress this way? YoYo Yu, co-founder of The University of Hong Kong student-led social enterprise MoodBox, once did—until she realized how discouraging "toxic positivity" can be. 🌧️🫂

In response to the public stigma surrounding mental wellness, Yoyo founded MoodBox to challenge stereotypes. Featured recently on RTHK's Healthpedia, she shared how MoodBox personifies common mental health experiences and conditions into relatable original characters—the "Mood Friends" (Demi, Anxi, Odie, and Zippy). 🎨✨

By combining creative design, stories, upcoming emotion toolboxes and the anonymous storytelling platform "Messages in a Bottle," MoodBox reminds us all: emotions aren't flaws to be fixed, but signals to be heard. Accepting every emotion is the first step toward healing. 💙

【電視訪談】「開心啲啦！」當身邊朋友情緒低落時，你曾否這樣安慰過他們？社企心晴盒子聯合創辦人兼香港大學社會科學學院社會工作及社會行政學系社會工作碩士學生余穎琪（Yoyo）也曾如此，直到她發現這種「有毒正能量」反而會對當事人造成二次傷害。🌧️🫂

有見大眾對精神健康仍存在不少誤解與標籤，Yoyo 創立 MoodBox，希望透過創新方式推動大眾認識情緒與心理健康。早前她作客香港電台節目《精靈一點》，分享她如何將常見的情緒與精神健康挑戰擬人化，創作出四位平易近人的「心晴夥伴」——憂憂 (抑鬱)、慌慌 (焦慮)、逆逆 (對立反抗) 與閃閃 (ADHD特質)。🎨✨

Fostering Research Integrity at HKU 🔬

Research Services hosted another successful Seminar on Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) on October 12, 2026, under the leadership of Professor Danny Chan, Director of Education and Development for Research Integrity (DEDRI), together with Deputy DEDRIs, Professor Simon Young, Professor Joshua Ho, and Dr Wai Lan Tsang. 👏

The seminar brought together over 250 participants, including professoriate staff, junior researchers, and administrative colleagues, underscoring HKU’s shared commitment to upholding the highest standards of research integrity and compliance. ⚖️

This round of the seminar focused on timely issues shaping the research landscape, including the growing impact of GenAI. Professor Alice Wong, Associate Vice-President (Research), delivered the welcome speech, setting the scene for the seminar and reaffirming the University’s commitment to research integrity. We were honoured to have Professor Mike Perkins from British University Vietnam as the external speaker, who shared insights on how GenAI is reshaping different stages of the research process, alongside HKU speakers Professor Simon Young and Professor Joshua Ho, who shared insights on conflicts of interest and research data management. 📊

A key highlight was the panel discussion on “AI, data management and accountability in research”, chaired by Professor Perkins, with panelists Professor Sir Andre Geim, Professor Joshua Ho, Professor Walter Seto, and Professor Rachel Sterken. Their discussion sparked thoughtful conversation on how researchers can navigate emerging challenges responsibly and ethically. 💡

The seminar concluded with group discussions led by 10 facilitators from across disciplines, creating valuable opportunities for participants to exchange views and reflect on responsible research practices. Together, these exchanges reinforced HKU’s ongoing efforts to build a research culture grounded in integrity and excellence. ✨

🚀 QwenCloud AI Builder Workshop Recap | Transforming Founders and Students to Agent Deployers 🚀

On 13th October, the intensive AI-Workshop was successfully held thanks to our outstanding partner, Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund and Qwen Cloud. Around 80 enthusiastic innovators, students, researchers, and startup founders gathered to explore agent-user interactions and seamless AI deployment.

🤝The events not only marks the continuous partnership between Alibaba Group and HKU Entrepreneurship Ecosystem, but also deepen the importance on students and founders' exposure to agentic AI.
