The history of the Faculty of Medicine can be traced back to the Government and Legislative Council’s approval in 1974 to establish a new medical school at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The Faculty was set up to cope with the needs of society for graduates with solid and professional training in medical knowledge and competency. To date, there are 5 schools and 14 departments with 450 regular teaching staff and 3,600 adjunct/honorary teaching staff in the Faculty offering teaching for the 8 undergraduate programmes and a number of postgraduate programmes. We also provide continuing and professional training to the public and healthcare professionals. So far, over 15,200 graduates and undergraduate students have been trained.

恭喜中大醫學院繼昌堂臨床技術學習中心總監 單文輝醫生 榮獲「卓越教學獎2026 - 一般教學人員組別」！

單醫生深信，有效的教學始於了解學生。為了幫助學生克服害怕在同儕面前犯錯的心理關口，他致力營造一個安全且充滿支持的學習環境，鼓勵學生發問，並讓他們明白在課堂上說「我不知道」是絕對可以的。為緊貼迅速發展的現代醫學，他亦積極引入AI輔助學習平台以支援學生自主學習，讓珍貴的面對面真實病人小組教學變得更具成效。

對單醫生而言，獎項從來不是目標，學生的成長才是最大回報。他分享了一次難忘的經歷：他曾花四星期時間，陪伴十位在期末臨床考試失利的醫科畢業班學生。他發現學生並非能力不足，而是因考試壓力導致表現變得機械化。單醫生不僅在學術上指導他們重構臨床思維，更在情緒上給予支持，幫助他們克服內疚與恐懼，重建信心，最終見證他們成功跨過難關。

🏆 Faculty Education Award 2026 – Dr. Victor SIM 🌟

"Whether I was caring for patients as a medical doctor or teaching medical students, my philosophy has always been the same—to do what's best for the people I'm serving."

Congratulations to Dr. Victor Sim, Director of the Kai Chong Tong Clinical Skills Learning Centre at CU Medicine, on receiving the “Faculty Education Award 2026 – General Faculty Member”!

Dr. Sim believes that effective teaching begins with understanding students. To help highly motivated students overcome the fear of making mistakes, he strives to create a safe and supportive learning environment where questions are encouraged, and it is perfectly okay to say, “I don’t know”. To keep pace with rapidly changing medical practices, he also embraces AI-assisted learning platforms for self-study, maximising the efficiency and effectiveness of precious face-to-face clinical teaching with real patients.

For Dr. Sim, awards were never the goal; his greatest reward is seeing students grow. He shared a touching experience of spending four weeks with ten final-year medical students preparing for a clinical exam resit. Recognising that their struggles stemmed from exam pressure rather than a lack of knowledge, he supported them both academically and emotionally. Helping them overcome their fear, rebuild their confidence and clinical mindset, and eventually see them succeed was an incredibly rewarding journey.

【最新消息】中大今天公布委任醫學院院長趙偉仁教授同時兼任中大（深圳）協理副校長（醫療）及醫學院院長。趙教授將會統領兩間醫學院的發展方向、學術規劃及策略合作，並全球招攬頂尖醫療人才。是次任命於2026年11月1日起生效，並將與其出任中大醫學院院長的現有任期一致。

此項任命標誌著中大在「一個品牌，兩個校園」的理念下邁出重要的戰略部署，進一步鞏固兩校園於醫學教育、前沿轉化研究及卓越臨床服務的實力和優勢，並利用港深兩間中大醫院的重要臨床研究實踐平台，推進醫療創新及醫學教育國際化，助力培育國際高端醫療專才，提升區內醫療水平繼而服務整個大灣區，配合國家「十五五」規劃及《香港第一個五年規劃》。

【New appointment】CUHK has appointed Professor Philip CHIU, Dean of CU Medicine, to concurrently serve as Associate Vice-President (Medical Affairs) and Dean of Medicine at CUHK-Shenzhen. Professor Chiu will oversee the strategic development, academic planning and collaboration initiatives of both medical schools, while leading global recruitment efforts to attract top medical talent. The appointments will take effect on 1 November 2026, with a term aligned with his current tenure as Dean of Medicine at CUHK.

This marks a significant strategic move under CUHK’s “One Brand, Two Campuses” vision. It will further strengthen the capabilities and advantages of both campuses in medical education, translational research and clinical excellence. By leveraging the crucial clinical and research platforms provided by the two CUHK medical centres in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, CUHK aims to advance medical innovation and the internationalisation of medical education, cultivate top global healthcare professionals, elevate regional healthcare standards and serve the broader GBA. The initiative is also aligned with the National 15th Five-Year Plan and the First Five-Year Plan of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Professor Chiu expresses his gratitude and shares his vision for the future: “Strengthening collaboration between Hong Kong and Shenzhen in medical education and research is key to driving high-quality healthcare development in the Greater Bay Area and across the wider nation. I will devote my full efforts to fostering deep-level synergy between the two medical schools across education, research and clinical innovation to achieve a powerful ‘1 + 1 > 2’ effect. This appointment will enable CU Medicine to further expand its clinical data and translational research platforms, reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as an international hub for medical innovation. At the same time, it will accelerate the internationalisation of the School of Medicine at CUHK-Shenzhen, attract top-tier medical talent and drive breakthroughs at the frontiers of medicine. 【機械人創新生態】中大醫學院於 10 月 20 日在InnoHK醫療機械人創新技術中心（MRC）接待來自瑞士洛桑聯邦理工學院（EPFL）的頂尖專家代表團。繼上月瑞士聯邦教育、研究與創新部長 Martina Hirayama 博士率團訪港後，是次訪問進一步深化了瑞士與香港在教育、科技創新及醫療機械人領域的交流與合作。

中大外科學系助理教授葉瀚智醫生帶領 EPFL 代表團成員——包括智能系統實驗室（Laboratory of Intelligent Systems）主任 Dario Floreano 教授、可重構機械人實驗室（Reconfigurable Robotics Lab，簡稱 RRL）主任 Jamie Paik 教授，以及微型生物機械人系統實驗室（MicroBioRobotic Systems Laboratory）主任 Selman Sakar 教授參觀 MRC，深入了解香港在醫療機械人領域的創新生態與最新臨床轉化成果，並就未來的科研協作展開深度交流。

MRC是中大在香港特區政府InnoHK資助下成立的研究中心之一。是次交流進一步鞏固了香港與瑞士頂尖科研學術機構的合作關係，同時展示中大醫學院在醫療機械人領域的前瞻發展。中大醫學院將持續推動國際學術與科研協作，不斷突破醫療機械人技術界限，為全球醫療與健康事業作出貢獻。

【Advancing the Robotics Ecosystem】On 20 October, CU Medicine had the pleasure of hosting a delegation of top robotics experts from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) at the InnoHK Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center (MRC). Following last month’s Hong Kong visit led by Dr. Martina Hirayama, Swiss State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation, this follow-up exchange further deepens collaboration and dialogue between Switzerland and Hong Kong in education, technology innovation, and medical robotics.

Dr. Hon Chi YIP, Assistant Professor from CU Medicine’s Department of Surgery, led the EPFL delegation—including Prof. Dario FLOREANO, Director of the Laboratory of Intelligent Systems; Prof. Jamie PAIK, Director of the Reconfigurable Robotics Lab (RRL); and Prof. Selman SAKAR, Associate Professor of the MicroBioRobotic Systems Laboratory—on a tour of the MRC. The visit provided deep insights into Hong Kong’s vibrant innovation ecosystem and the latest clinical translation achievements in medical robotics, setting the stage for future research collaboration.

Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center (MRC) is one of CUHK’s InnoHK Centres established as part of the Hong Kong government’s InnoHK initiative. This exchange further strengthens the partnership between leading scientific and academic institutions in Hong Kong and Switzerland, while highlighting CU Medicine’s pioneering advancement in medical robotics. Moving forward, CU Medicine will continue to foster international academic and research collaborations, pushing the boundaries of medical robotics technology to contribute to global health and medicine.

【腫瘤學殊榮】葉氏家族基金腫瘤學教授、中大醫學院助理院長（外務）陳林教授榮獲「2026年小林基金會獎」，成為今年亞洲僅兩位獲此殊榮的癌症研究者之一。

「小林基金會獎」由日本小林癌症研究基金會於2010年開始頒授，旨在表揚日本以外亞洲國家及地區的傑出研究人員及醫療團隊，以肯定他們在腫瘤學或癌症化學治療領域的卓越研究、重大貢獻及傑出成就。

陳林教授是肝癌研究的國際領軍學者，在推進肝癌的病理認知、預防及治療方面貢獻卓著。他是具里程碑意義的《刺針》肝癌委員會報告第一作者，與內地學者共同領導該委員會發表《全球肝癌防治策略和行動計劃》報告。這是《刺針》逾200年歷史上，首次由華人學者領導的重大癌症專題報告。 基金會在頒獎詞中特別肯定陳教授在制定歐洲腫瘤內科學會（ESMO）臨床實踐指南方面的重要領導作用，以及在闡明免疫治療抗藥機制方面的奠基性研究。他的工作亦推動多項國際科研合作及創新治療策略的發展，對肝癌研究領域帶來深遠影響。

陳教授是中大醫學院第三位榮獲小林基金會獎的學者。過去十年，中大醫學院是獲頒小林基金會獎（研究者類別）最多的高等學府，彰顯學院在亞洲癌症科研領域的領先地位及卓越貢獻。中大醫學院副院長（科研轉化及創業）兼李樹芬醫學基金腫瘤學教授莫樹錦教授，以及李鄭婉芳精準腫瘤學教授兼中大一期臨床研究中心醫務總監（腫瘤科）馬碧如教授，分別於2020年及2022年獲此殊榮，以表彰他們在肺癌及鼻咽癌研究方面的傑出科研成就和臨床貢獻。

【Prestigious Oncology Award】Professor Stephen Chan, Ip's Family Trust Professor of Clinical Oncology and Assistant Dean (External Affairs) of CU Medicine, has received the 2026 Kobayashi Foundation Award, becoming one of only two cancer researchers in Asia to receive the prestigious honour this year.

Presented by the Kobayashi Foundation for Cancer Research in Japan since 2010, the award recognises distinguished researchers and medical teams from Asian countries and regions outside Japan for outstanding contributions and achievements in oncology or cancer chemotherapy.

A global leader in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) research, Professor Stephen Chan has made significant contributions to advancing the understanding, prevention and treatment of liver cancer. Together with scholars from the Chinese mainland, he co-led as first author the landmark report of The Lancet Commission on liver cancer, outlining comprehensive strategies for liver cancer prevention and treatment worldwide. It marked the first time in The Lancet’s more than 200-year history that a major cancer report was led by Chinese scholars. The Foundation particularly recognised his leadership in developing the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Clinical Practice Guidelines and his seminal research into the mechanisms of immunotherapy resistance. His work has also driven international research collaborations and the development of novel therapeutic strategies, making a profound impact on the field of liver cancer research.

Professor Chan is the third CU Medicine scholar to receive the award, following Professor Tony Mok in 2020 for his contributions to lung cancer research and Professor Brigette Ma in 2022 for her work in nasopharyngeal cancer. Over the past decade, CU Medicine has received more Kobayashi Foundation Awards in the researcher category than any other higher education institution, underscoring the Faculty’s leading position and sustained contributions to cancer research in Asia.

Congratulations to Dr. Florence Tang, Lecturer from the School of Biomedical Sciences at CU Medicine, on receiving the “Faculty Education Award 2026 – General Faculty Member”! Dr. Tang is dedicated to inviting students to be active partners in their medical training. Through digital technologies and hands-on experiences, she focuses on fostering engagement, authenticity, and reflection to train students’ higher-order critical thinking.

Dr. Tang shared a touching memory of a former student who credited a classroom simulation for helping them stay completely calm during their first real clinical encounter. This reinforced her belief that teaching is not just about passing on knowledge, but about building the real-world confidence, judgement, and compassion students need the moment they step out into the world.

活動當天，參加者透過一系列精彩活動，親身體驗中大醫學院的學習生活：

【Information Day 2026】 🩺✨ The Information Day 2026 was a resounding success, welcoming over 15,000 attendees to CU Medicine on 17 Oct 2026! Many sessions and admission talks had a full house, filled with enthusiastic prospective students, parents and guests. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us – it was truly inspiring to engage with so many passionate future leaders in healthcare.

Throughout the day, visitors gained first-hand insight into life at CU Medicine through a wide variety of activities:

• Admission Talks: Professors and staff shared essential information about entry requirements, selection criteria and practical interview tips for the upcoming admissions cycle.
• Programme Consultations: Visitors spoke one-on-one with professors, alumni and current students for personalised advice on programme choices, campus life and career opportunities.
• Guided Tours and Interactive Workshops: Guests explored our state-of-the-art laboratories and teaching facilities, to experience CU Medicine’s dynamic learning environment.
• Hands-on Demonstrations: Interactive showcases and live demonstrations were hosted by our five schools: the School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Chinese Medicine, The Nethersole School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy and The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care.

【以雙腳引起公眾對腦腫瘤關注】中大王連大腦腫瘤中心日前舉行為期兩日第18屆「腦前行」慈善步行籌款，吸引超過550名港澳人士參加，藉以提升社區對腦腫瘤的認識。這項全球步行活動由國際腦腫瘤聯盟（IBTA）發起，期望全球參加者累計總步行里數可達到20萬公里，足夠環繞地球五圈，目的為引起公眾對腦腫瘤的關注。

香港區參加者由山頂道花園出發，步行至終點柯士甸山遊樂場，全程約3.5公里。香港累計步行里數一直是亞洲之冠，今年成績更創歷年新高，累計步行里數超過1,849公里。

【Raising public awareness of brain tumours step by step】The CUHK Otto Wong Brain Tumour Centre held its 18th charity walkathon, "Brain Trekking 2026," over two days in Hong Kong and Macao. The event attracted more than 550 participants across both regions to raise community awareness of brain tumours. Initiated by the International Brain Tumour Alliance (IBTA), this global event aims to accumulate a total walking distance of 200,000 kilometres—equivalent to circling the globe five times—to draw public attention to brain tumours.

Participants in Hong Kong walked a 3.5 km route from Peak Road Garden to Mount Austin Playground. Since the event's inception, Hong Kong has maintained its position as the top mileage contributor in Asia. This year, Brain Trekkers in Hong Kong and Macao, including patients and their families, set a new record by contributing 1,849 km toward the World Walk target.

俠醫仁心(71)：擂台人生(下)

人在胎兒孕育時，父母遺傳兩組基因，除了決定我們的性別、外貌、身形和性格外，亦令我們與眾不同。與林家棟先生對談的「擂台人生」講座中，莫樹錦教授問：「與眾不同，是好事定壞事？」我相信「與眾不同」絕不是壞事，科研與藝術創作同樣需要多角度思考，引發創新思維。然而，醫學診斷和治療需要有板有眼、一絲不苟，因病人的生命在我們手裏，絕不容許治療程序上離經叛道。

上世紀七八十年代，外科手術概念是「大醫生，大傷口」（big surgeon, big incision），外科醫生通過大傷口來準確把握手術切除的技術和範圍。當時腹腔鏡技術仍處於起步階段，只能用於診斷腹膜病變。

影像科技的進步，開創了發展微創手術的契機。其中一名始創者，「現代腹腔鏡手術之父」德國婦產科醫生庫爾特．塞姆（Kurt Semm），在1980年完成人類歷史上第一例腹腔鏡切除闌尾（盲腸）微創手術。然而，這項驚世醫學科技突破，沒有為他帶來掌聲，反而帶來職業生涯的毁滅級打擊。他的微創技術被傳統外科醫生視為極度危險的「歪門邪道」，德國外科協會（German Society of Surgery）主席甚至憤怒地公開要求塞姆醫生接受精神醫學鑑定。他的功績被埋沒，當時世人甚至以為，1987年法國外科醫生以微創切除膽囊，才是全球第一宗微創手術。

然而，塞姆醫生除了擁有醫生資格，也是一名工程師。他頂住所有羞辱與懷疑，持續改進微創手術儀器，發明了電子二氧化碳氣腹機、內鏡縫合術儀器等核心微創工具。幾年後，其他醫生陸續嘗試他的方法，發現微創手術不僅傷口小、出血少，患者復元速度更是傳統開腹手術的好幾倍。

中大醫學院在李國章教授、鍾尚志教授和劉允怡教授帶領下，1990年6月率先在香港完成首宗微創膽囊切除手術。小刀口為病人帶來的卻是大改善，手術後痛楚大減，病人術後第二天已能下牀，大大減少術後併發症和肺炎。如今微創腹腔鏡手術已經成為全球外科手術「黃金標準」，亦為塞姆醫生的創新精神平反。

創新需要跳出舒適圈的大膽思考和小心求證，然而不是每一次創新都能成功。「到底作為醫生，怎樣才算成功？」莫教授問道。「手術成功」固然是外科醫生持續向前的推動力，最大成功感卻來自病人迅速康復的臨牀效果。我比較幸運，年輕時已找到最喜歡的專科，並在香港接受優良培訓。然而，一個成功的外科醫生，同時需要接受和面對手術後發生的併發症。日劇Doctor X主角外科醫生大門未知子的名言：「我，絕不失敗。」事實上如果外科醫生不成功，最嚴重後果就是手術失敗、病人死亡。我相信沒有一個外科醫生會向病人和家人作出如此「絕不失敗」的承諾，但心底裏卻對自己的手術作出絕對不能失敗的要求。

我最不能接受的卻是「手術成功，病人死亡」。手術後死亡涉及多種原因，如心臟病、中風和肺炎等，然而外科醫生必須在手術前，全面考慮病人身體情况，能否承受大型手術對身體引發的壓力和後遺症，不應只集中在自身手藝和技術上。我為病人做手術前必然會作出最壞打算，我的座右銘就是：「落得到手術台，才會為病人開刀。」現在套用在醫學院管理上同樣大派用場，每當為醫學院作出未來發展方向的規劃時，我會思考和評估最壞結果，希望在能夠處理最壞情况的基礎上，為醫學院帶來創新機遇和最大發展。

「人生起跑線」實在難以比較，不止是成長時的家庭環境，天生的基因與後天的機遇同樣影響人生際遇。「天生我材必有用」，每個人都有着不同的人生軌迹，做人着實不必執著於與人比較而「自怨自艾」！「有危必有機」，人生必定會遇上挑戰與困難，挑戰往往不過是迎接人生下一個階段前的小磨練！
