The final day of the 8th International Swift Conference included a keynote address by ATU Mayo Outdoor Education graduate graduate Georgia Macmillan on dark skies, a discussion with artist and writer Gordon Darcy, traditional music with Stephen Doherty and friends and choral music from Carra Singers. A big thank you to Declan Halligan from second year History & Geography who worked so hard all week on the conference.

Another interesting day at the International Swift Conference in ATU Mayo, beginning with Dr Brendan Dunford’s inspiring talk about the work of Burren Beo, ReFarm and Farming for Nature. We also learned about the dramatic love lives of the common swift!

We had a wonderful first day at the International Swift Conference which began this morning with opening words from ATU President Dr Orla Flynn, Head of Department of Environmental Humanities Dr Deirdre Garvey, the Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council Seán Carey and Christopher O'Sullivan Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage with special responsibility for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity. The minister is a keen bird watcher who shares the delegates enthusiasm for the swift.

Highlights of the final day of the George Moore conference included a paper by ATU Mayo lecturer Dr Fiona White, the presentation of the post-graduate student paper prize and a rehearsed dramatic reading of one of George Moore’s works by actor Sam Monaghan.

Day 2 of the George Moore Conference involved a visit to Moore Hall and a rare opportunity to go inside the house. Dr Fiona White spoke about the history of the house and the Moore family burial place at Kiltoom.

The 13th International George Moore Conference began today in ATU Mayo, with assistance from Mayo County Council and the Sunflower Foundation. We look forward to three days of talks and events on the theme of George Moore: Landscape and Memory.

We had a thought-provoking day in Westport at Samhlú, an event organised by Westport Civic Trust on regenerating Irish towns. It included s talk by Dr Fiona White on the landed estates and Irish towns.

Our second year students recently visited Ballintubber Abbey, looking at the history and archaeology of the site, and its location on the Tóchar Phádraig. Many thanks to the staff for the warm welcome and the opportunity to see the tomb of Tibbot-na-Long Burke.
