It's the end of the first half term for our exceptional Year One class. What an incredible six weeks it has been introducing the fundamentals of our Practice to incoming students here. We covered so much ground - Digital & Analogue, lightroom & darkroom, full frame & crop sensor, ... explored the history of the camera, then created one from cardboard [the magic of the camera obscura]. We experimented with light trails, long exposures, depth of field & all the necessary and novelty techniques. We developed, scanned, printed film... a first taste of The Darkroom for incoming students, slowing down the process for a deeper understanding of our craft. We learned about qualities, characteristics and "pockets of" light, about observation, about connecting to and engaging with the visual world with a different perspective, a different mentality. It's been terrific. Thanks for the massive efforts, the unrivalled enthusiasm and for being so reliably "sound". For us educators, to have a class of interested, honest and hard working people in a room each day lights a fire under us. Speaking on behalf of our beloved Photography Department, we can only say great things about this group && so much more to come. We've only started!
