From Samhain to Dracula, Ireland has a rich tradition of folklore, storytelling and encounters with the supernatural.

Tá áit lárnach ag an mbéaloideas i gcultúr agus i dteanga na hÉireann:

From “Bobbing for Apples”, Turnip Jack-O’ Lanterns, to “Going a Souling”, Samhain Traditonally marked the transition from harvest to winter and was associated with boundaries between the living and the spirit world, which many primary classrooms explore!

MIE Halloween Fact- Bram Stoker, former civil servant, theatre manger and author of Dracula (1897), was born at 15 Marino Crescent! His celebrated Gothic novel continues to invite scholarly exploration of Irish folklore, cultural identity and nineteenth-century society.

As we wrap up October, we’re looking back at a brilliant week of mathematical discoveries, creativity and fun across campus, while coinciding with Black History Month!

📖 Diversity & Anti Racism Student & Faculty Workshop with “Black and Irish” Co-Founder & COO, Pierre Yimbog
🌳 Maths Trails around Marino and Fairview Park with our TCD International Foundation Programme students.
🌍 Celebrating famous mathematicians and connecting Maths Week daily “cracking the code” activities with Black History Month, recognising diversity and achievements in STEM.
🫧 Bubbly Maths PME Student Workshops – welcoming 130 local primary school pupils for an exciting interactive show, followed by ideas for our PME Masters students!
📏 Playful Maths workshops – our PME and MGO student teachers exploring creative ways to teach measurement.
🗣️ Maths TeachMeets in English agus Gaeilge!
🧠 Over 300 daily “Fadhb an Lae” submissions and Maths Strategies Challenge prizes
📸 Maths Photography Competition – spotting maths in everyday life.
🎬 Annual Maths Movie Night, “Hidden Figures”, “The Librarians” and staffroom challenges!

We were delighted to welcome Houses of the Oireachtas Ceann Comhairle, Verona Murphy TD to Marino Institute of Education today!

Hosted by President Teresa O’Doherty and MIE Students' Union 📢 Amy Martin, today’s visit provided a valuable opportunity to showcase our campus, meet with staff and undergraduate students from our four undergraduate courses and highlight MIE’s significant contribution to teacher education, Gaeilge and the wider Irish education sector.

ECE Book Launch 🗞️

We recently celebrated the publication of “Time to Think: Enacting Slow Pedagogy – What Covid-19 Taught Us About Time, Pace and Pedagogy in Early Childhood Education and Care, authored by MIE Early Childhood Education lecturers, Dr. Maja Haals Brosnan, Dr. Natasha O’Donnell and Dr. Rhona Stallard.

The evening brought together colleagues, researchers, students and members of the critical Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) community for a thought-provoking discussion on the importance of time, care and relationships in early childhood education.

Our launch commenced with an inspirational key note speech by Professor Emer Ring from Mary Immaculate College and insightful panel discussions by Prof Glenda Walsh of Stranmillis University College, Belfast and Professor Nóirín Hayes.

Drawing on longitudinal qualitative research during the Covid-19 pandemic, the publication invites us to reconsider the pace of early childhood education and the importance of creating space for presence, connection, joy, engagement with nature and meaningful interactions with children.

Congratulations to our three authors on this valuable contribution to research and practice in our early childhood education undergraduate and Masters degrees!

Happy World Teachers’ Day | Lá Idirnáisiúnta na Múinteoirí!

Today, MIE celebrates our student teachers and alumni who make a difference to classrooms and communities every day for over a century as an institute of education.

Since today also marks the first day of TFI Smarter Travel “Walktober” with MIE Sustainability Committee, our final-year B.Ed. students were recently getting outdoors during their Science Education elective, planting lamb’s lettuce, pak choi, radishes, wildflowers and tomatoes with Dr. Sandra Austin.
A fitting way to celebrate teaching: learning, growing and getting outdoors!

We recently welcomed students representing 26 nationalities to MIE for IFP Orientation, with students joining our campus community from many countries including Turkey, Mexico, Kuwait, Ukraine, Malaysia and Botswana

The Trinity International Foundation Programme is delivered here at MIE, supporting international students as they prepare to progress to undergraduate study at Trinity College Dublin.
