NMCI Training Services recently welcomed JOIFF Director Ed Sullivan and Shaun Baker of Collective Resilience Ltd for a productive exchange of ideas on water-based training.
JOIFF promotes competency-based training and standards for high hazard industries.
The visit provided an opportunity to share maritime training experience and explore a proposed JOIFF-led training standard for small boat operations on inland waterways and offshore, in support of high hazard activities such as oil spill response, equipment transfers, mining operations and search and rescue (SAR).
Topics included multi-craft operations, rough water and swift water handling, vessel stability when carrying operational equipment, battery-powered vessels, and lithium-ion battery hazards.
Discussions also covered region-specific hazards encountered around the globe for example, fouling of propellers and water intakes by kelp, and other aquatic vegetation, alongside hazardous materials, PPE for incident responders, decontamination, firefighting support, and regulatory compliance for waste handling.
Instructor and assessor qualifications and competence were also explored, alongside specialist operational risks and training needs that extend beyond conventional powerboat training.
We look forward to hearing from JOIFF as they share perspectives from other JOIFF-accredited training centres and the wider international network to help inform the development of the proposed standard.
