ATU Sligo and ATU St Angelas, previously known as IT Sligo and St. Angela’s College Sligo are part of Atlantic Technological University (ATU).

ATU is one of the largest multi-campus universities in Ireland. Located in the North West of Ireland, we are a regional leader in education, innovation, and economic and social development. AI – Fast, Furious and Sustainable?

Artificial Intelligence is evolving at an extraordinary pace, transforming how we learn, work, communicate and engage with the world around us.

ATU, as part of the EU GREEN European University Alliance, will host a free public event exploring the role of AI in education, research, workplaces and everyday life, and its opportunities and implications for creating a more sustainable society.

The event will bring together expert speakers Joanne Sweeney, Richard Archbold, Dr Valerie McTaggart and ATU PhD researcher AmirPouya Masoumi to share insights on the rapidly changing AI landscape through the lens of sustainability.

Chaired by ATU Communications Manager Aidan Haughey, the event will also feature a panel discussion and audience Q&A, offering attendees the opportunity to ask questions, share perspectives and explore the challenges and possibilities AI presents for our communities.

ℹ️ATU Statement Regarding Industrial Action:

Industrial action relating to national pay agreement negotiations is currently taking place across Ireland and is affecting higher education institutions, including Atlantic Technological University (ATU).

ATU has been notified by the TUI, SIPTU, UNITE and FORSA trade unions of planned strike action on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, and Wednesday, 21 October 2026.

If this action proceeds, students should not attend any ATU campus as teaching activities, catering and student support services will not be available on these dates. Should the strike be cancelled, classes will go ahead.

All teaching activity, including both on-campus and online classes, has been cancelled for Wednesday 14 October. Classes will be held as usual on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

The work of four recent ATU Fine Art graduates from our Sligo and Galway City, Wellpark Road campuses is on display in Dublin as part of Westerly, which officially opened at Europa Gallery this week.

Launched by ATU President Dr Orla Flynn, the exhibition features work by Callum Lewis, Cassandra O’Neill, Sarah Callaghan and Scott Nokia, spanning sculpture, photography, painting and other media.

Presented by ATU in partnership with the European Parliament Liaison Office, Westerly runs until 30 October at Europa Gallery, part of Europa Experience Dublin, 11 Chatham Street.

♻️ Over 40 students and staff from ATU came together at Lissadell Beach to take part in Ireland’s National Big Beach Clean.
The National Big Beach Clean is an annual nationwide initiative that brings communities together to remove marine litter from Ireland’s coastline, while raising awareness of the impact of litter on our marine environment.

The event was organised by ATU Sligo Green Campus in collaboration with Clean Coasts and EU GREEN Alliance, providing an opportunity for our students and staff to contribute to a national environmental initiative while taking practical action at a local level.

🎓Announcing the AbbVie Ireland – ATU STEM Excellence Scholarship 2026/2027 🎓

If you have applied through the CAO for entry to Year 1 of an eligible full-time undergraduate programme (listed below) in 2026/27 or have started the Science (Common Entry) programme or Engineering (Common Entry) programme and are progressing to Year 2 of one of the eligible programmes (listed below), you could be eligible for this scholarship.
✅Forensic Investigation and Analysis
✅Occupational Safety and Health
✅Biomedical Science
✅Pharmaceutical Science with Drug Development
✅Pharmacy
✅Mechanical Engineering
✅Robotics and Automation

Up to three scholarships worth €12,000 over 4 years are available for students entering these STEM programmes at the Sligo campus of ATU. An internship as part of the Scholarship is expected and will be organised in collaboration with ATU and AbbVie Ireland, subject to business needs.

☘️ Best of luck to James Hunt as he represents Team Ireland in Electrical Installations at the 48th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, China, this week.

From Virginia, Co. Cavan, James will compete in Electrical Installations, having completed Phase 4 of his electrical apprenticeship at ATU Sligo.
